Is the Hennessey Mammoth 1000 TRX Overland Edition Overpowered? Perhaps Not

How important is a surplus of engine power for overland travel? Well, it depends; how much power do you really need as you explore your chosen terrain? For overland travel in the Global South, you will generally only find a few roads where you can unleash all your pent-up horses and cruise at North American or German highway speeds. That said, there will be more than a few pucker moments, overtaking a caravan of trucks on single-lane mountain passes when a neck snap of acceleration may get you and yours back into your single narrow lane just in time. When exploring the USA and Canada, however, it seems the more power you have, the better, as the roads and highways allow for driving with intent, not within ridiculously low-speed limits hoping not to run foul of another questionable cop with a handheld radar which reads only one speed. A moderately powered vehicle (it all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio) generally delivers better fuel economy; therefore, a range of exploration and moderate power accompanied by a sensitive driving style will ensure less wear and tear and greater reliability. When it comes to off-road driving, an excess of power is less important than ground clearance and articulation, and without grip, power means nothing; it is possible to have too much power. Unless, of course, you love sand and dune driving, the Saudis do not drive 300 Tdi’s into the desert; they take as many horses as one can cram into a Land Cruiser. So, if you live in the USA or the Middle East and enjoy long drives to dunes, deserts, and beaches, the Hennessy Mammoth TRX Overland may very well be the vehicle you have been waiting for.

Hennessey Mammoth 1000 TRX

The Texas-based hypercar manufacturer, and high-performance vehicle creator, has introduced an overlanding upgrade for its Mammoth TRX, a package that creates the “world’s most powerful pickup truck.”

The Hennessey Mammoth 1000 TRX boasts 1,012 horsepower and a curb weight of 6,349 pounds, which equates to roughly 351 BHP per ton, more than enough to be crowned King of the Dunes. The vehicle’s blistering performance comes courtesy of its 6.2-liter supercharged ‘Hellcat’ V8 enhanced with Hennessey’s high-flow 2.65-Liter supercharger, larger fuel injectors, and high-flow induction system complimented by performance-boosting calibration modifications. The upgrades result in a head-turning truck with 1,012 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and mountainous torque of 969 lb-ft @ 4,200 rpm.

The Overland Edition includes a wide range of user-friendly equipment for truck-based living, and the modular load system utilizes a full TRX bed rack as its foundation, topped by a quick-pitch hard-shell rooftop tent. A retractable 55-inch awning provides the shade and shelter essential for sandy locations, while auxiliary fuel tanks and a pressurized water reservoir are also mounted on the rack to increase range and utility. Other accessories include a 28-inch splitting axe, shovel, LED perimeter illumination while grab handles and a retractable ladder improve accessibility to the tent and equipment.

The new Overland Edition is available on the company’s ‘Mammoth 900’ or ‘Mammoth 1000’ versions of the Dodge RAM TRX. The comprehensive upgrade can be professionally installed by the Hennessey Performance technicians and be added to any Mammoth build for $19,950.

John Hennessey, company Founder, and CEO, says,

“Our new Mammoth 1000 TRX Overland Edition is the ultimate adventure-oriented vehicle as it adds off-the-grid capability to the world’s most powerful pickup. Thanks to the modular convenience of the system and its seamless integration, explorers may travel to remote areas and effortlessly set up camp without compromising performance or 4×4 capability. There’s nothing else like it!”

The equipped vehicle measures 228.9 inches (5.81 meters) long, 82.1 inches (2.09 meters) wide, and 77.6 inches (1.97 meters) high and is capable of carrying five adults in comfort while towing more than three tons; the creators claim that this vehicle is the most comprehensive and capable performance overlanding truck on the market and that typically overlanding customers will specify Hennessey’s Stage 2 off-road enhancement package for their TRX. This package adds custom bumpers, vision-boosting LED lights, a front leveling kit, 37-inch off-road tires on 20-inch wheels, and upgraded electronic fold-out steps.

The Mammoth Overland Edition looks like a capable and relatively comfortable vehicle for shorter overland journeys; adding a load system will only improve the vehicle’s usability for longer trips. There is one other modification that we would insist on, considering that we would use this vehicle as a desert and dune explorer. As there is no upgrade to the factory brake package, and therefore standard-size brake calipers, the wheel size should be reduced to 18 or even 17 inches, if possible, to allow for the fitment of 37-inch all-terrain tires. The more rubber you have, the more you can deflate for the best possible traction in an off-road scenario combining power and grip when the rubber meets the dune.

The Mammoth 1000 TRX Overland Edition with Stage 2 upgrades benefits from Hennessey’s comprehensive three-year / 36,000-mile warranty. The vehicle is also available for international purchases and shipping through authorized Ram retailers or Hennessey directly.
