Classic Toyota Land Cruiser fans familiar with ICON (who isn’t?) are in for a treat as Jonathan Ward, renowned for his pioneering work in modern resto-mod design, has reached a significant milestone in his career with the completion of his 500th Land Cruiser project. The latest addition to his impressive repertoire is the 1964 ICON New School Edition FJ44. This sublime vehicle is a testament to Ward’s dedication to revitalizing and re-imagining one of the automotive world’s most iconic vehicles, introducing modern engines, chassis, and suspension alongside braking and other essential features that “remove(d) the martyrdom often demanded when driving a vintage car”, according to the press release.
The 500th Land Cruiser has a powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, featuring unique sport braking and suspension systems. Notable for its attention to detail, the ICON FJ44 New School Edition boasts a refined and modern custom interior, complete with heated seats and rear jump seats accessible via the truck’s bi-fold rear tailgate. Additionally, it includes a roof rack and ladder for added utility. Conveniently powered steps on either side of the truck facilitate easy entry and exit. ICON has integrated an upgraded hi-fidelity audio system and incorporated modern amenities such as a rear reverse camera, MIL LED headlights, locking differentials, a ceramic-coated exhaust, and uniquely designed ICON New School wheels.
The New School Edition 1964 FJ44 model is an evolution of experience that spans more than three decades. During this time, Ward has honed his craft, establishing himself as a trailblazer in the restoration and modification of vintage Land Cruisers. His journey began with the founding of TLC 4×4 and later the ICON brand, where he embarked on a mission to breathe new life into these legendary off-road vehicles.
Reflecting on his journey, Ward attributes his fascination with Land Cruisers to a transformative experience during a safari in Africa in the 1990s.
“I came back from safari in Africa with my eyes completely opened to the incredible capabilities of these old, vintage Land Cruisers after seeing what they could do in the wild in harsh terrain. Of course, everyone has an opinion, but the camps with the Defenders and Series trucks seemed to be breaking down (mechanically) more often by comparison to these diehard Land Cruisers. Experiencing firsthand what a Land Cruiser could do out there in that very serious, highly varied environment made a huge impression and encouraged me to start TLC 4×4, the restoration business that predated ICON.”
The evolution of Ward’s career saw him transition from traditional restorations to groundbreaking resto-mods, blending classic aesthetics with modern performance enhancements. Among his notable achievements is the restoration of rare and coveted Land Cruiser models, such as the 1967 FJ45 pickup truck and the elusive 1977 FJ40. Ward’s restoration of these iconic vehicles preserved their historical significance and elevated them to newfound levels of excellence.

One pivotal moment in Ward’s career came with the creation of the 1965 FJ43, a project that laid the foundation for the birth of ICON. Departing from traditional restoration practices, Ward collaborated with clients to create bespoke, premium vehicles that pushed the boundaries of innovation. Ward’s reputation for excellence caught the attention of Toyota executives, leading to a collaboration on an early prototype for the FJ Cruiser.

Jonathan Ward recalls,
“Our original shop in Van Nuys was this tiny ode to all things Land Cruiser. Filled with love and passion, but we could barely accommodate Mr. Toyoda and all the executives that came to see this American company that takes old Land Cruisers apart and makes them brand new. At first, I think they thought that we were out of our minds, but they left inspired. Mr. Toyoda commissioned two more builds from us. ICON was born out of that experience.”
This partnership marked a turning point for Ward, paving the way for the establishment of ICON and cementing his legacy as an industry innovator. Since its inception in 2007, ICON has remained at the forefront of vintage Land Cruiser restoration, with Ward leading the charge in delivering exceptional quality and craftsmanship.
If you have a couple hundred thousand dollars lying around and an afternoon to spare, we highly recommend a visit to ICON’s slick website, where you can configure your own dream classic Toyota Land Cruiser. We are dreaming of a New School Edition FJ44 in Pacific Blue with the 6.2 V8, five-speed manual, roof rack, and locking differentials.
