The rapid expansion of overlanding as a hobby and lifestyle has ushered in positive and negative consequences for the natural landscapes we explore. In this video, Kasper Hoglund delves into the ramifications of overlanders’ actions in his native Norway. This predicament has escalated into a global concern, as a minority of overlanders opt to disregard vehicle access restrictions and trail closures. Initially appearing innocuous, such actions are poised to have far-reaching consequences for all enthusiasts. This phenomenon has already manifested in various regions worldwide, where once-accessible trails and campsites have been restricted and prohibited due to the thoughtless behavior of a careless few. While we generally refrain from “naming and shaming” (there are always two sides to a story), this video underscores a pivotal issue, serving as a poignant reminder that we must embark on our journeys with respect for both nature and the legal frameworks of the countries and states we explore. An excellent example of responsible adventure travel is the recent Nordic Series by Expedition Overland, where Clay Croft and his team explored Scandinavia respectfully while still having the adventure of a lifetime. If they can do it, so can we.
