The Ford Transit is, by far, the best-selling commercial van in the USA. Sales have been close to double that of the closest competitor, the Chevrolet Express. Our observation has been that the Dodge Ram ProMaster 3500 is one of the most popular vans for overland travel, but this isn’t easy to quantify, and Ford has now set its sights on the travel and leisure market in a bid to retain the crown across the board.
On the 13th of October 2022, Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis announced on Twitter that the Ford Transit is expanding its lineup for the 2023 model year. In November, Ford Pro will introduce the new 2023 Transit Trail van, equipped with “its new adventure-seeking capability alongside interior and exterior enhancements providing do-it-yourselfers and motorhome distributors a turnkey canvas direct from the factory.”
Currently offered in three lengths and roof heights, Transit vans are a popular platform for camper van builds with amateurs and professionals alike. The vehicle lends itself to customization, and a host of upgrade and configuration options are available on the Ford website. For instance, the Adventure Prep Package offers factory-installed features like unique 16-inch wheels, electrical access points, dual AGM high-powered batteries, and more.
There are precious few details available with regard to the base and upgraded specifications for the Transit trail, but we expect all to be revealed next month.

The Ford Transit Trail will be assembled in Missouri.
