There are some key characteristics of GMC’s new Sierra 2500 HD AT4x AEV Edition pickup that are particularly appealing for overlanders. The first is a robust 2,600 pounds of payload capacity. The second is the range of functional and well-thought-out AEV upgrades, like 18-inch AEV-branded Salta wheels wearing 35-inch hybrid tires, GVW-rated tow points on the winch-compatible steel bumpers, and metal skidplates. The third is the suite of mechanical upgrades that GMC adds to the AT4x AEV Edition: 1.5 inches of extra ground clearance, Multimatic dampers, driver-selectable rear locking differential (replacing the old limited-slip type), and an Off-Road traction control setting, along with upgraded front control arms and steering knuckles.
Those are all some very impressive goodies for backcountry travel, but the real star of the show is the optional ($9490) 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel paired with the slick-shifting 10-speed automatic. With 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, the Sierra can be rated for up to a stunning 18,200 pounds of towing (enough to drag Matt Scott’s Earthroamer out of the mud!). The AEV overflows with so much power that throttle modulation in low range can be a challenge, necessitating upshifts to keep the big truck planted on loose surfaces.
We tested the AT4x AEV on our test track in Arizona, along with thousands of miles of roads and trails around Arizona and Utah. We found the independent front suspension perfect for stable and responsive steering at highway speeds without sacrificing proficiency on the trails. The generous payload capacity means that when unloaded, the rear suspension can feel stiff, but the trade-off is that the Sierra will accommodate pretty much any camper you can throw at it. All of this capability, power, and durability come at a price, however. Starting at $94,290 for the AEV edition, adding the optional big diesel means writing a six-figure check.
