Drop Campers Expanded Compact Adventure-Trailer Range With New Drop X4

This small family camper trailer is innovative and has us thinking about how we could use design elements to improve our own camper, which has a similar shape and interior space. You know you have created something great when others in the know are tempted to borrow your ideas, and this camper trailer will not stay unique for too long, guaranteed.

Barcelona-based builder Drop Campers has expanded its compact adventure-trailer range with a new flagship, the Drop X4. The cooperative, founded in 2017 on a “keep-it-simple, stay wild” philosophy, presents the model as “the ultimate small off-grid hybrid adventure trailer,” a description that neatly sums up its ambition to give 4WD owners a hard-wearing yet comfortably furnished base camp that can follow them far beyond sealed roads. Unlike the firm’s teardrop-shaped Dropland and Dropy, the X4 adopts a squared-off body topped by a pop-up roof, a format that promises genuine stand-up headroom without pushing overall height during travel.

The shell is a 30-millimeter aluminum sandwich panel fastened to an oversized 6-millimeter aluminum chassis. Drop Campers reinforces the structure with an external exoskeleton, then fits progressive independent suspension and Ironman shock absorbers to keep the 235/75R15 BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires planted over rough tracks. Side protection steps, full LED lighting clusters, and a 360-liter front toolbox are included as part of the base specification, signaling the company’s determination to ship the unit trail-ready rather than rely on an extensive options list merely to reach parity with rivals.

Inside, the pop-top turns the trailer into a two-level cabin. A 160 x 200-centimeter upper bed sleeps two adults—or three children—beneath insulated canvas and hard-roof panels, while a U-shaped dinette on the lower deck converts to a 140 × 194-centimeter double. It may seem a bit cramped, but it would probably be perfect for warm-weather travel, especially with a couple of kids in tow. Excuse the pun. Without the kids, there is plenty of space for a couple, especially with the upper-level bed stowed. In daytime mode, the dinette’s rotating table creates a four- or five-person lounge and dining area, and, crucially for those who have no choice but to enjoy winter touring, all functions remain accessible even with the roof lowered. Soft trim combines vinyl flooring, white composite walls, and carpeted accents to curb noise and condensation, and multiple lockers, wardrobes, and open shelving take care of personal kit.

A fully plumbed galley stretches 1.2 meters along one wall, mixing a bamboo work surface with a two-burner Dometic gas hob, a 45-liter Vitifrigo fridge, and a stainless-steel sink with hot and cold water. Opposite, the designers have carved out an enclosed wet bath with an aluminum shower tray, a removable footrest, and a dry-flush toilet—an uncommon luxury in this weight class and a clear nod to the European market’s growing taste for self-contained rigs.

Off-grid autonomy comes from a 110-liter freshwater tank, a 25-liter greywater reservoir with an electric dump valve, and an Autoterm diesel system that delivers both air and water heating. Electrical needs are met by a 305-watt, roof-mounted solar panel feeding a 200-amp-hour lithium battery through a Victron MPPT controller. A 1,200-watt MultiPlus inverter, a Cerbo GX Touch monitor, DC-DC charging capability, and multiple USB and 230-volt outlets round out a package intended to power induction cooktops, laptops, and camera gear in the field.

While the standard specification is extensive, owners can tailor the X4 to specific missions. The catalog lists Profender Dakar shock upgrades, underbody armor from Almont 4WD, various wheel-and-tire combinations, awnings from Fiamma or Alu-Cab, roof racks for bikes or skis, a Starlink mini pre-install, winches, LED rock-lights, and even a hammock for pets or children. Each option is designed to bolt directly to pre-engineered hard points, reducing build complexity and preserving the trailer’s 4WD-friendly proportions.

The base Drop X4 is priced at around $71,000, positioning it above the lighter Dropy and below many full-size European caravan conversions while still undercutting several imported Australian and North American hybrids. The figure includes the entire standard equipment list rather than a teaser base, meaning buyers should only need to budget for their preferred accessories and regional taxes. It does not seem that this innovative camper will be heading across the pond any time soon, but if you are heading that way with your rig, you can collect one there and head down to Morocco.
