Dometic Launches Free Gear-Equipped Getaways to Reconnect Urban Dwellers with the Outdoors

Global outdoor technology company Dometic has launched a new experiential initiative to help urban residents reconnect with nature. The program, launching in Los Angeles, offers a series of 17 fully equipped, 36-hour outdoor getaways designed to remove the barriers that often prevent people from spending time outdoors.

The concept is straightforward. Participants enter a draw for a chance to take part in a prepared overland-style adventure for two people, with all logistics handled in advance. Vehicles from Lexus, Toyota, and Ford are outfitted with a complete suite of camping and off-grid equipment, allowing participants to depart the city with minimal preparation. Each trip includes a reserved campsite in Joshua Tree National Park, a curated itinerary, and access to round-the-clock support.

According to Dometic’s chief marketing officer, the project is intended to demonstrate how the company’s products can reduce friction in outdoor travel. By providing a fully prepared setup, participants can focus on the experience itself rather than the logistics typically associated with overlanding or camping.

Each vehicle is configured as a mobile base camp. Sleeping arrangements include rooftop tents and supporting camp furniture, while integrated awnings and lighting systems create a functional outdoor living space. Cooking equipment is supplied alongside a pre-prepared, seasonal menu designed for outdoor dining. Central to the setup is Dometic’s CFX5 electric cooler, which stores and preserves the food throughout the trip. Power is provided through portable battery systems, enabling off-grid operation of essential devices and appliances.

Water storage, hydration systems, and compact cooking solutions are also included, reflecting a comprehensive approach to short-duration, self-supported travel. While specific configurations vary slightly between vehicles, each setup is intended to provide a consistent level of comfort and usability, regardless of prior camping experience.

Los Angeles was selected as the launch location due to its well-documented traffic congestion and dense urban environment. The city routinely ranks among the most congested in the United States, with drivers spending significant time in traffic each year. By contrast, destinations such as Joshua Tree offer relatively accessible wilderness within a few hours’ drive, making them suitable for short-format escapes.

The program will run from April 14 through April 24, with a total of 17 trips available during that period. Participants can apply online for a chance to secure one of the limited experiences. The short duration of each trip is designed to fit within the constraints of modern urban schedules while still offering a meaningful break from city life.

Dometic’s broader strategy appears to center on lowering the entry threshold to outdoor travel. Rather than focusing solely on product sales, the company is increasingly investing in experiential campaigns that allow potential customers to engage directly with its equipment in real-world conditions. This approach aligns with a growing interest in overland-style travel, particularly among first-time participants who may be hesitant to invest in gear without prior experience.

The initiative also highlights the continued convergence between automotive capability and outdoor living systems. By pairing established vehicle platforms with integrated camping solutions, Dometic is reinforcing the idea of the vehicle as a central component of modern adventure travel.

While limited in scale, the Los Angeles launch serves as a pilot for what could become a broader rollout in other urban centers. If successful, the model may offer a template for introducing new audiences to outdoor travel in a structured, accessible format.
