The first generation Toyota Tundra remains a pinnacle choice for overlanding with no shortage of inspiring builds online from the likes of Basil’s Garage, Trail Runner Customs, and Topo Toppers. However, when it comes to gen 1 builds “Sleepy” from Equipt Expedition Outfitters surely takes the crown. Built on a 2004 Toyota Tundra (262,300 miles) this sensational rig showcases a long list of premium upgrades and is topped with a well appointed AT Atlas camper (a full walk around is available on the Equipt Expedition Outfitters Youtube). At $38,500 this package represents impressive value when you consider it was built from the ground up with top tier parts by one of the most respected builders/outfitters in the industry. From the Seller:
“Sleepy has been a part of the Equipt family for over 9 years now. Think of it as a ¾ ton supercharged V8 Tacoma. Now who wouldn’t want that? With the last known in-box TRD Supercharger under the hood, it is quite a sleeper of a truck. Hence the nickname. We also have commercial airbags and an inline compressor to handle a much larger load. We had an Eezi-Awn rack system and a Four Wheel Campers Fleet on the truck but settled on an AT Overland Atlas paint matched and loaded. Yes, Sleepy has some miles on it but you wouldn’t know it. When I purchased the truck, I wanted to make sure that it was ready to go. I took it to the Toyota dealer and had them flush and replace all fluids, and do the 150,000 mile servicing interval, which included the timing belt, replacing every hose on the engine, and more. During our ownership, we have made every effort to ensure Sleepy is in top condition. We had the engine compression wet tested before adding the charger, to make sure it was a worthy powerplant. At 189,000 miles, it tested at 185 psi across all cylinders. Brand new, they test at 192 psi. Last fall, I made a solo cross-country run to an event in Oklahoma. It was an issue-free 2,500 mile round trip. At 65 mph, we average 12-13 mpg. If you get into it, that comes down to 10-11 mpg. I do not doubt it has another couple hundred thousand miles to go.”
