Toyota Chinook

Old Toyota pickups are nigh on indestructible and subsequently favored globally for the world’s toughest climates and terrains. Unsurprisingly, they’re a desirable choice for overlanders with recent adventure-equipped examples such as this 1987 Sunrader 4×4, 1993 Land Cruiser HZJ75 Dual Cab, and 1999 Tacoma TRD with a Chinook Camper. Today’s 1987 Toyota Chinook 4×4 (237,000 miles) is no exception and showcases tasteful modifications, a well-equipped camper interior, and is featured in a number of noteworthy publications. At $25,000 it’s fairly priced and would be an ideal budget-friendly option for someone looking to transition to life on the road. From the Seller:

This legendary overlander, dubbed the ‘AllFather of offroad adventure trucks,’ blends the renowned durability of a 1987 Toyota 4×4 truck with the iconic 1976 Chinook Gazelle pop-up camper. Powered by the bulletproof Toyota 22RE engine, this rig was my full-time home for three years as I explored the wilds of North America. It has been featured in Van Life by Foster Huntington and OutdoorX4 Magazine, graced the cover of Toyota TCT Magazine, and been battle-tested and supported by the PolerStuff Tent Team. This rig may not win races, but it will conquer any terrain. The unbeatable combination of Toyota’s legendary 4WD reliability and the nimble Chinook camper makes this rig ideal for reaching remote destinations that other vehicles can only dream of.”

The Chinook is fitted with a 2.4-liter petrol motor that produces 105 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. An exceptionally long-lived engine is mated with impressive capability thanks to 4WD, high and low range, lifted and uprated suspension, and armor. Inside, the Toyota is intentionally utilitarian but does enjoy basic driver comforts that include power steering, an aftermarket stereo, and cupholders.
