The 4Runner of any iteration is considered a pinnacle overland platform and continues to set the benchmark for reliability and build quality. We recently celebrated 40 Years of Toyota 4Runner and acknowledged that the Fifth Generation is the most extensively proven and best-selling to date. Publisher Scott Brady explains, “Starting with the Fifth Generation 4Runner, Toyota really hit its stride and found the perfect blend of reliability, durability, capability, and comfort … For overlanding, it was a shoo-in, boasting a payload as high as 1,600 pounds and the serviceability of the global Prado/Land Cruiser II 150 chassis. The 5th Gen ran for nearly 15 years with minimal changes, outlasting all of the competition and still selling 120,000 units in 2023.” It was for these reasons and more that it was awarded the number one spot in Overland Journal’s Top 10 New Overland Vehicles Chart. Cue today’s 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail (155,000 miles) showcasing a plethora of premium upgrades and topped with an Alu-Cab Gen 3.1 rooftop tent. At $26,000, it’s less than half the starting MSRP for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter and is certainly not half the vehicle. If I were to drive around the world tomorrow, I’d take the proven Fifth Gen over the Sixth Gen. Automotive expert and contributor Chris Cordes chose the 4Runner Trail Edition as his primary travel vehicle, stating, “I’ve driven my fair share of vehicles off-road, and I can say that the 4Runner is one of the easiest and most comfortable yet … For the most part, driving the 4Runner on dirt roads is about as smooth and comfortable as on pavement. I would even go as far as saying that when compared side by side, it would perform and feel better than my Range Rover on air suspension.” If you’re in the market for a turnkey overland rig that also doubles up as a refined, well-equipped, and practical daily driver, then look no further.

From the Seller:

This is Seneca, our family’s 2015 4Runner Trail Edition 4WD grocery getter and adventure mobile—watch the complete build on Youtube. We’ve owned this 4Runner since we bought it new in 2015, and it’s been garage-kept ever since. In 2021, we collaborated with OK4WD in Stewartsville, New Jersey, to build it and offer it for rent on outdoorsy.com. We only rented Seneca a handful of times to some really great people before we decided to pull it off the rental market and enjoy Seneca for ourselves.”
