The 4Runner is a 4WD icon and a favorite on the forum, with recent offerings including this 1992 SR5, a 2002, and 2022 TRD Off Road Premium. The first 4Runner/Hilux Surf, launched in 1984, was built on the venerable Hilux platform and inspired in small part by the success of the Hilux-based Trekker and Trailblazer conversions. Unlike many 4WDs that pandered to the luxury market at the cost of backcountry performance, the 4Runner has always prioritized rugged functionality above all else. For many, the first gen remains one of the best of the breed thanks to its legendary capability (beloved by the rock crawling community) and its bulletproof 22RE motor. It’s also extremely customizable, with a huge catalog of parts, accessories, and services on offer that ensures each build is unique as its owner. Cue today’s 1988 Toyota 4Runner (180,000 miles), which has been restored to a high standard (see original listing for full details) and boasts the factory Deluxe package. This is a truly stunning rig, and would serve as a fantastic blank canvas for a minimalist overland build out.
From the Seller:
“These are becoming rarer by the day as many have succumbed to rust issues and a lot were cut up for rock crawling. This example benefitted from a high end paint job, not a cheap respray, worth $10,000+. The frame is solid, 0 rust issues, and I painted the exterior of the frame to enhance it cosmetically. The third member was also slowly dripping oil, so the whole axle was removed, sanded, and painted. While that was out, I pulled the leaf springs and replaced the leaf spring bushings, installed new U bolts, and painted the leaf springs before reinstalling. Factory hard top is currently being refinished in its factory texture, and black paint, along with a new headliner.”
