Subaru Outback

It’s easy to become fixated on heavily modified 4WDs and convince yourself that to overland, you need a lifted rig rolling on 35s with front and rear lockers. However, the reality is that most of us will be traversing vast stretches of paved roads and well-documented and accessible backcountry routes. Hence, these “rocklanders” are often overkill for real-world applications and can be exhausting to drive long distances. Alternatively, the Subaru Outback is perhaps not the first vehicle we think of for travel, but over recent years, it has developed a cult-like following of people who recognize its do-it-all credentials. In addition, the aftermarket can transform this inclement weather machine into a legitimate backcountry explorer, while still retaining the Outback’s family hauler, daily driver, and commuter credentials. Cue today’s 2017 Subaru Outback that has covered just 65,000 miles and features a luxurious interior, premium aftermarket upgrades, and is topped with a Smittybilt Overland rooftop tent. If you’d like to learn more about why this vehicle is such a great fit for adventure travel, then check out the builds from Carey Lando, 4Xpedition, and Chasing Adventures

From the Seller:

This car has been the perfect commuter/camper for the past couple of years, but now that I’m in construction, I need to up-size it to a truck. The Subie has always been maintained on time and has not given me any issues at all. I think this platform is perfect for the average Joe or Jane. You get to commute with a luxurious leather interior, heated seats front and back, a perky drive with the six-cylinder, and good gas mileage (even with the larger tires and rooftop tent, I average over 20 mpg). Then when the weekend comes, there’s plenty of space for your climbing gear or beach toys and the AWD is capable of tackling campgrounds and dirt roads even when rutted or snowy.”

2017 Subaru Outback

The Outback is fitted with a 3.6-liter motor that produces 256 horsepower, 247 pound-feet of torque, and returns a combined 22 mpg. A dependable motor is matched with surprising capability thanks to AWD, an uprated and lifted suspension, armor, and intelligent onboard systems such as X-Mode, which mitigates traction and throttle control for slippery surfaces. Inside, the Subaru showcases a well-equipped interior with driver comforts that include:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Power adjustable and heated leather seats
  • Cruise control
  • Infotainment system with navigation
  • Power sunroof
