The cost of classic Japanese 4WDs continues to appreciate with many Land Cruisers becoming prohibitively expensive. Fortunately, there are still some affordable alternatives on the market that provide many of the same benefits at a fraction of the cost. The Mitsubishi Montero is a great option with previous overland-ready builds on our forum including this $9,000 1991, an $8,500 2000, and this stunning $15,500 1998. Today’s 1997 Montero (169,000 miles) caught my eye first and foremost because it’s triple-locked, but also due to the tasteful upgrades, clean bodywork, 3.8-liter MIVEC engine swap, and affordable $14,000 OBO price point. It’s a lot of vehicle for the money when you consider this comparable triple-locked 1997 Land Cruiser is more than double the price. Further still, thanks to the Montero’s boxy dimensions it provides generous interior space for an overland build-out or micro-camper configuration as demonstrated by Gondirtin, Montana Montero, and Driven Overland. It’s worth noting that today’s offering includes a “big stash of extra Montero parts” and other aftermarket spares and accessories.
From the Seller:
“Up for sale is my 1997 Montero. I have put 20,000 miles on the truck, and it runs great. The Motor is a 3.8 MIVEC out of a late-model-year Eclipse, with custom chrome ECU, injectors, and a custom intake manifold. The Montero features waterless coolant and a US-made, high-capacity aluminum radiator. It has 4.63 gears, a non-disconnect front diff with a Gen 3 front finned diff cover, and front and rear lockers with Aisin Hubs.”
