Mercedes G500

There are many vehicles suitable for travel, but far fewer that are widely considered a pinnacle overland platform, and the G-Wagen or “Geländewagen” is one of them. This iconic 4WD was first developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch and sold by Mercedes as a hardcore military off-roader. The latest iteration carries forward the model’s legendary build quality and backcountry credentials but introduces sumptuous refinement and demonstrates that rugged dependability and interior comfort can exist in harmony. Executive Publisher Scott Brady states, “The venerable Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen is the elder statesman of overland vehicles, having been in production for nearly 40 years. While most G-Class vehicles are relegated to a sentence of domestic carriage for urbanite families, some have been rescued to live the life of a Teutonic adventurer.” Those that do are exceptionally well equipped from the factory for the backcountry and can be further uprated for exploration thanks to extensive aftermarket parts, accessories, and services. With this in mind, cue today’s 2008 Mercedes G500 (121,000 miles), which boasts a plethora of premium upgrades, a custom drawer/storage system, and an eye-catching external wrap and official Puch rebrand kit. Further still, this turnkey example has been meticulously maintained with a full breakdown of recent service records documented in the original listing. If you’re looking for an adventure ready rig that’s as comfortable on the commute as it is driving around the world then look no further. If you’d like to learn more about the realities of international travel in this iconic Mercedes, then listen to Stanley Illman on Exploring the World by G Wagen on the Overland Journal Podcast.

From the Seller:

We now live in France for 9 to10 months of each year, so we have decided not to pretend we will use our G when in the States for only a couple of months. Our last major trip was 2024. We then finalized getting ready to travel to Prudhoe, AK, when we had the opportunity to relocate to the Southern French Mountains. We have spared no expense keeping it fully serviced and making sure we did not depreciate the interior by using it as we did (we are very careful). As an example, the interior platform does not contact or rub on the interior. We removed the rear seat, and it is stored as new. We also have the OEM stock running boards, rear glitzy black and stainless steel spare tire cover, side steps and chrome bull bar. All in, we are at about $86,000 invested with all turnkey equipment, including the truck, and have used it for 23,000 miles. No breaks or trouble to report, and it always starts perfectly. The G500 for 2008 was one of the best years, with one of the most reliable engines. We rebranded the truck as a Puch with an official kit we bought in Graz, Austria. As you may know, they were branded both as Mercedes and Puch depending on sales location. We will be in the US until September. I will deliver anywhere in the US for a return flight.”
