1989 Mercedes 310 TN 4×4 :: Classifieds

Mercedes 310 4x4

The Mercedes 310 TN 4×4 is legendary, but its rarity means we’ve featured just one 1992 example previously. Introduced in 1977, it was offered in three wheelbase options, with a range of different engines, and a select few were uprated by 4WD experts Ighaut Allrad. The latter is considered a pinnacle platform for travel with various drool-worthy builds showcased by Shisharka Spot, Passport Diary, and Markus Ascher. It’s also a van I’m familiar with as my good friends Chef Campers acquired one a few years back and have been living in it ever since. Cue today’s pristine 1989 Mercedes 310 TN 4×4 (37,000 miles), which has been fastidiously maintained and would serve as the perfect blank canvas for a full overland build. At $38,000, this rig represents an impressive value when you consider the rarity, low mileage, and that it’s half the cost (and much cooler) than a Sprinter AWD. If you’d like a better idea of how this van performs as an international travel companion, then check out the epic adventures of Ins Nirgendwo in Africa.

From the Seller:

“This is a Mercedes-Benz 310 TN 4×4; it’s one of a small number of examples that were given aftermarket 4×4 conversions in-period, using the drivetrain underpinnings of the W460 G Wagon. The 310 TN van body has a high-roof design with two seats up front and a generous cargo area in the rear – many of these have been converted into camper vans as a result. The physical size of the TN van series was considerably larger than the Volkswagen Transporter of the time, and as a result, the Mercedes vans were popular for logistics, postal services, and tradesmen, as well as those aforementioned camper van conversions. This example served in the fleet of a fire department in Switzerland before being imported into the United States.”

The 310 is fitted with a 2.3-liter M102 inline-four motor that produces 104 horsepower and 134 pound-feet of torque. A dependable engine is matched with excellent capability thanks to an Ighaut Allrad conversion that uprates the 310 using G Wagen components. This includes a heavy-duty 4WD system, high and low range, armor, a lifted suspension, live axles, and a rear locking differential. Inside, these rugged credentials are balanced with basic driver comforts.
