Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is an overlanding icon and is undoubtedly a pinnacle 4WD for exploration. It’s the vehicle of choice for our Senior 4WD Editor Graeme Bell who has travelled around the world with his family in a Defender 130. He states, “The Defender has a Td5, turbo-diesel five-cylinder engine with ECU, and has been absolutely reliable … it has 315,000 kilometers on the clock, and we’re hoping to put another 300,000 kilometers on before we replace the engine. We have only had a few breakdowns, but in true Landy fashion, it always got us home.” His experience is not unique and is shared by the likes of Expedition Rove, Next Meridian, The Landy Expedition, Olga On Tour, Maple Leaf Drifters, and more. The success of this platform is no surprise since it was engineered from the factory to be the ultimate utilitarian all-terrain workhorse and is, in all respects, fit for purpose. Further still, it enjoys almost unparalleled access to international community support and OEM and aftermarket parts and accessories. Cue today’s 1999 Land Rover Defender (291,000 miles, engine rebuilt in 2017), which has to be the cleanest 110 we’ve featured and showcases a plethora of premium upgrades. In addition, it has enjoyed recent maintenance, including a new heavy-duty clutch, brakes, steering column, extended radiator grill, intercooler, and fan.” It’s worth noting that today’s seller is a hardcore enthusiast and has a reputation on the forum for building exquisite Landys—this rig is no exception. If you’re in the market for a turnkey 110 to explore the US and beyond, then look no further.

From the Seller:

This Defender started life in 1999 as a 110 SW, rebuilt in 2017 with a Puma body and an XS half-leather interior. It has an extensive list of high-quality overland equipment throughout, which includes underbody and corner protection, lifted radius arms, HD half shaft with flanges, LED light upgrades, and many accessories. The Td5 engine has been Stage II remapped by Td5 Inside with Allisport engine upgrades and a Demand stainless steel exhaust system. The engine shows approximately 291,000 miles but was rebuilt in 2017. It needs nothing and is absolutely ready to hit the trails (just got back from an Anza Borrego trip last weekend).”
