2020 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Sport w/ Carbon Fiber Pop Top Camper :: Featured Classified

Jeep Wrangler

I use “pinnacle” sparingly when describing overland builds, but today’s rig is deserving of this status. Cue today’s 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Sport (49,500 miles), which boasts premium modifications and is topped with a carbon-fiber, pop-top camper. This remarkable build is the work of community member Wabi Sabi Overland, with the entire project documented on the Expedition Portal forum. Working for the Overland Collective and living on the road, I’m fortunate to have seen/experienced thousands of dialed rigs, but for its size, this is one of the most impressive. Despite its modest footprint, it delivers amenities, redundancy, and functionality akin to a full-size expedition truck. Highlights include 300 amp-hours of lithium, supported by 525 watts of solar, climate control, a fully equipped kitchen, and much more. At its foundation is a Jeep Wrangler, which is one of the few modern 4WDs that’s first and foremost engineered for when the tarmac ends. It’s also the aftermarket darling with unparalleled support from industry leaders such as American Expedition Vehicles (“AEV”), which procure parts and accessories that meet or exceed OEM quality and safety standards. Today’s Jeep benefits from a plethora of AEV products, alongside other premium brands, to elevate the platform for around-the-world exploration. This project was one of two made by Wabi Sabi Overland; the second build (camper box structurally identical but with a different pop-top configuration, systems, and interior) was utilized internationally by renowned overlander Dan Grec (The Road Chose Me). Thus, this is not simply a proof of concept, but a meticulously crafted and rigorously tested global platform that’s turnkey ready for its next adventure.

Expedition camper From the Seller:

“We’ve overlanded since 2009, and after an incredible five-month trip in our Unimog camper ended in 2019, I started dreaming of a smaller, nimbler vehicle that would be sea container shippable yet retain most of the comforts of our larger Unimog. I evaluated chassis from all the available North American options, and after extensive consideration, a current-year, 4-door Jeep Wrangler was the only platform that met all of our requirements. I completed more than 40 configuration studies and carefully tracked weight and center of gravity throughout the process. I also tested a wide range of materials commonly used in my aerospace day job and ultimately selected foam-cored, carbon-fiber panels for the majority of the construction. The focus of this build was a lightweight, highly capable, and well-balanced setup that could travel at or below gross weight while still delivering the comfort and conveniences we value. My wife and I have logged over 10,000 miles of memorable trips in the vehicle, and it has performed exceptionally well. I’m an engineer who genuinely enjoys designing and building vehicles, and with new ideas already taking shape, it’s time to pass this thoughtfully built and adventure-ready camper on to its next owner.”
