2020 Ford Transit 350 AWD w/ 2022 Main Line Overland Camper Conversion :: Featured Classified

Ford Transit overland build

The Ford Transit has long been a figurehead of the vanlife movement, and more recently, the AWD variant has been adopted by the overlanding community. It’s unsurprising since, like the venerable Mercedes Sprinter 4×4, it adopts an intelligent AWD system (as tested by Scott Brady on the Expedition Portal YouTube) and enjoys access to a huge catalog of aftermarket parts, accessories, and services. Since its inception back in 1965, the Transit has become a global automotive icon known not only for its workhorse credentials but also beloved for its drivability. British Top Gear discussed how it became the “getaway vehicle of choice in Britain” because it famously had the performance and handling of a car, while being able to transport a high volume of, in these cases, stolen goods. Today, it remains one of the most impressive vans to drive on the market with a powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost motor that propels it from 0 to 60 mph in under seven seconds. The combination of generous payload (up to 3,540 pounds), rugged all-terrain capability, and everyday drivability, reliability, and economy makes this a fantastic option for travel. Cue today’s low-mileage 2020 Ford Transit AWD (46,xxx miles), which has been optioned out from the factory, boasts premium aftermarket modifications, and a well-appointed Main Line Overland camper conversion. This is not simply a proof of concept but instead a proven rig that has completed a multitude of trips, including the infamous Pan-American highway (learn more about the family’s adventures on Instagram).

Ford Transit AWDFrom the Seller:

I spent my early to mid-20s living in the back of a Volvo station wagon with curtains, skis on the roof, climbing gear on one side of the car, and a Thermarest bed on the other side. Having everything I owned in a car provided an incredible sense of freedom and allowed for many cheap adventures in the American West. With the family, I needed something bigger and more comfortable, especially for a 401-day expedition on the Pan-American Highway. We wanted an AWD drive with enough headroom and East West sleeping space for someone my height (6 feet 1 inches). We had a few must-haves, including a gas engine (lack of DEF/ULSD south of the border), a three-point shoulder belt for our daughter, no propane (due to the challenges of getting refills outside of North America), and beefed-up suspension/tires/lights/armor. In other words, a comfortable, small family apartment on the inside and a heavy-duty expedition vehicle on the outside. Once we sell our van, we will reinvest the proceeds into our next expedition vehicle, one that will fit in a shipping container for a longer expedition to Europe and Africa.”
