There’s a differentiation between an overland vehicle and an expedition truck. The former generally provides the necessities for life on the road, while the latter offers all the comforts of home. The Ford F-550 is one of the most popular platforms for expedition builds in the US, and for good reason. The combination of 4WD capability, powerful and long-lived motors, well-equipped interiors, and crucially, a huge payload and towing capacity is ideal for overland travel. Subsequently, it’s the full-size truck of choice for premium expedition vehicle builders such as EarthRoamer, Krug Expedition, Kokopelli Overland, Adrenalin Industries, and many more. Although drool-worthy, these builds are often the best part of a million dollars and consequently prohibitively expensive to the average person. Fortunately, some talented individuals have created bespoke one-of-one builds that deliver many of the same desirable characteristics at a fraction of the cost. Today’s low-mileage 2019 Ford F-550 XLT 4×4 Crew Cab (42,810 miles) is a great example. This awesome turnkey expedition truck has been tastefully uprated for backcountry exploration with a custom flatbed and a Northern Lite 9-6 limited edition camper. At $125,000, this is not a budget rig, but it is a huge saving compared to off-the-shelf alternatives. If you’d like to see more ways this rig could be enhanced for exploration, check out inspiring custom builds from Never Quit Overland, Museroamer, and Flatbed Round Earth.
From the Seller:
“Back in 2011, we were inspired by the stories and experiences shared by the overland community and, as such, built out an M101 military trailer into an offroad camping rig. That served us well for about eight years as we pulled it around Canada and the US on multiple road trips, exploring back roads, national parks, and wild places less traveled. While it served us and our dogs well, we were attracted to the larger rigs with all the comforts of home but with the capability to still access remote locations. With the well-known expedition rigs out of our price range, we researched a reliable truck chassis and camper combo. Northern Lite manufactures industry-leading, 4-season truck campers built for the northern climates but also at home in warmer temperatures. It gave us a comfortable dry space, queen-sized bed, bathroom and shower, and full kitchen. The F-550 allowed for the addition of ample exterior storage space for mountain bikes, climbing equipment, skis, an outdoor kitchen, and enough payload to safely travel with the weight of the camper and cargo. This rig allows you to explore and experience the outdoors with the ability to stop at any time, anywhere, to eat, sleep, and play.”
