Ford Excursion

I’m a sucker for older rigs such as this 1986 Vanagon Syncro, 1997 F-350 w/ camper, and 1994 HZJ75. That said, as someone who has lived and traveled in a 40-year-old truck, I concede that they’re not without their caveats. With this in mind, 4WDs from the mid-90s/early 2000s find a sweet spot between classic charm and modern reliability. Today’s 2000 Ford Excursion 4×4 XLT (211,000 miles) is a great example of this symbiosis and seamlessly combines rugged boxy styling with a “million-mile” Power Stroke diesel motor. It’s a killer combo, which is why the Excursion was chosen as an Expedition Portal Project Vehicle with automotive expert Chris Cordes stating, “The Excursion utilized solid axles unlike nearly all SUVs produced at the time. Models like ours feature a Dana 50 up front, a Sterling 10.5 in the rear, and even an optional 3.73 gear set with a limited-slip differential. This not only makes it great for towing, but also improves off-road performance and allows for the fitting of larger tires. Front and rear recovery points came standard, as did a 7-pin towing system.” Further still, there are extensive aftermarket parts, accessories, and services available to further uprate this model for backcountry adventures. Subsequently, there’s no shortage of inspiring builds online from the likes of Mountainlanders, Best Damn EDC, and Excursion Overland. Today’s Excursion has recently undergone $15,000 in recent maintenance (see original listing for details) and boasts a plethora of top-tier aftermarket upgrades.

From the Seller:

A Ford Excursion overland travel truck in dark green. Clean, notarized Montana title, no accidents. Has never seen technical off-roading, just lots of gravel/dirt established roads. This was a great travel rig for our family for many years, and we are only selling to build a new all-season travel rig. We are the third owners (first two were best friends). Within the last five years, we did over $15,000 of mechanical maintenance and upgrades for reliability and fuel economy. Everything works. Serious buyers only, please. If you don’t know 7.3 diesels, read up on them.”
