Patriot Campers X3

Overland trailers are a great way to elevate the versatility of an existing adventure rig and provide additional storage, amenities, and accommodation for bigger trips. They’re also ideal for one-car households, since they can be hitched to most vehicles, turning a daily driver into a fully outfitted travel rig (this is especially useful if the primary vehicle needs to remain stock for school runs/commuting/etc). There’s no shortage of great options on the market as explored in detailed guides by Graeme and Luisa Bell (including Micro Campers and Trailers, Pop-top and Expandable Living, and Off Grid, Off-Road Trailers), but for many, Patriot Campers remains the best of the breed. The company, established in Queensland, Australia, in 2013, was conceived by avid offroader and fabricator Justin Montgomery, who recognized a distinct lack of rugged camping trailers capable of enduring the rigors of the outback. The result was the X1, a trailer designed to match the capability/access of a 4WD and built to survive years of extreme use. The X3 carried forward the same uncompromising build quality and ultra-durable design philosophy of these early models, but was significantly larger to provide a “live-in” experience. Executive Publisher Scott Brady states, “One of the realities of long-distance remote travel is bad weather, and this new X3 allows for sleeping and eating inside the trailer, high off the ground and in a small habitat with 130 liters of freshwater (with a hot water system), a diesel furnace, and 300 amp-hours of batteries managed by a full Redarc power management system. There is a strong argument that if you are to pull a trailer, you should be able to camp inside it, and this Patriot X3 delivers” (check out the full review on the Expedition Portal YouTube channel). Cue today’s 2020 Patriot Camper’s X3, which has been meticulously maintained and further uprated by the XOverland team (also includes various spare parts). Make no mistake, you will not find a more dialed and proven X3 on the market; it has been the figurehead of many expeditions (as documented on YouTube) and has a detailed build page on the XOverland website. Finally, a GEN2 X3 has a starting price of $65,000, which makes today’s uprated GEN1 an impressive value at $45,000.
