2019 Alu-Cab Canopy Camper :: Featured Classified

Alu-Cab Canopy Camper

This winter I’ll be spending the best part of $10,000 on my Vanagon Syncro’s bodywork, and since the chassis and camper are one cohesive unit, there’s no option to simply relocate the habitat. In other words, I’m bound to my Volkswagen, like a captain to his sinking ship, and it’s an expensive reminder that a truck camper could simply be relocated. Should your vehicle suffer a collision, a catastrophic mechanical issue, or indeed eye-watering bodywork, then a camper could simply be moved to another chassis (especially useful if you suffer a major issue when traveling internationally). In addition, when the camper is not in use, it can be temporarily removed and enables the pickup to serve as a daily driver or workhorse. It’s easy to become starry-eyed about the vehicle itself, but in many regards, focusing the majority of your investment on a transferable habitat makes a lot of sense. Personally, I’d go a step further and pair it with a flatbed with integrated storage lockers (think Bowen Customs, Aluma Tray, and Mits Alloy) for the ultimate overland package. There’s no shortage of truck campers on the market, but when it comes to ultimate backcountry durability, Alu-Cab continues to set the benchmark. Established in 2000 in Cape Town, South Africa, the company has spent almost 30 years developing and testing its campers in some of the world’s toughest environments, which is why their campers/accessories have joined XOverland on expeditions around the world (with the recent Milestones Expedition being no exception). To this end, cue today’s 2019 Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, which boasts factory options and a plethora of premium aftermarket upgrades. At $11,200, this package represents impressive value considering a base model new would’ve set you back the best part of ~$10,000 and a fully optioned-out example would be closer to $15,000 (and that’s before accounting for all the additional upgrades).

Built around Alu-Cab’s legendary aluminum construction, the Canopy Camper features a lifting insulated roof with dual-layer ripstop canvas, providing excellent weather protection and year-round comfort. Inside, the innovative lift-up bed platform creates generous standing room during the day while allowing bedding to remain inside the camper when closed. The double flip bed extension increases sleeping length, creating a spacious and comfortable sleeping area. Externally, structural T-slot extrusions allow accessories to be mounted almost anywhere on the camper, while integrated roof tracks provide the perfect base for roof bars, roof racks, and additional equipment. Additional highlights include rear MOLLE storage panels, roof lifting assist bar, grab handle for easy entry, and compatibility with most Double- and Extra-Cab pickup trucks.
