It’s easy to romanticize a minimalist rig for travel, but with three of my own (including a Fiat Panda 4×4 with a bed platform), I can share firsthand that for longer trips, working remotely, or living full-time on the road, it can become laborious. Consequently, there’s a lot to be said for an overland rig that balances rugged backcountry performance with the comforts of home. I’ve lived on the road for ~15 years, and during that time my campers have evolved from providing the absolute basics to being a micro-apartment on wheels. This has drastically reduced the fatigue often associated with living in a vehicle and enabled me to spend more time in remote places doing the things I love. To this end, cue today’s 2015 Itasca Navion 24J 4×4 (84,910 kilometers/52,760 miles), which boasts a plethora of premium modifications and is topped with a fully equipped RV habitation. This impressive overland package is underpinned by a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter 3500, which has been reimagined by the experts at Whitefeather with a heavy-duty 4WD system. This conversion alone cost ~$20,000, and unlike the factory AWD, it is a true 4WD with solid Dana axles, locking differentials, a ~4.5-inch lift and uprated suspension, and manual locking front hubs. Inside, it is more akin to a studio apartment, with comforts and amenities including four-season-ready climate control, 35 gallons of freshwater with on-demand hot water, a bathroom (with a separate shower), a galley kitchen, a house battery system, Starlink connectivity, and more. It will sleep six and has five belted seats (with the option to add more), which makes it ideally suited to a family. This stunning rig has been stored in a heated garage, meticulously maintained, and is available now with no lead time.

Mercedes Sprinter From the Seller:

“We built this RV to be a true expedition vehicle and a comfortable family motorhome. We wanted something capable enough to take us off the beaten path, but still easy to drive, sleep in, cook in, and live out of as a family. Over the years, it has taken us from the Pacific to the Atlantic, through the Rockies and Badlands, around the Great Lakes, and to every Canadian province except Newfoundland. It has carried bikes, kids, and sports gear on countless adventures and given our family lifelong memories. We love that it’s big enough for everyone to have space, but compact and maneuverable enough to actually use. The true 4WD system is great for going up in the mountains on forestry roads and up to ski hills. Our kids have now outgrown family overlanding, so we would love to see the rig go to someone who will continue using it for the adventures it was built for.”
