I’m a champion of the truck and slide-in camper combo since it’s one of the most versatile configurations for overlanding. The ability to seamlessly remove the camper when not in use retains your vehicle for everyday commuting/work, and since many offerings are completely self-contained they can be utilized as a static home base (great for leaving at campsites if you’re planning more challenging trails). Further still, if your truck suffers catastrophic mechanical failure, succumbs to rust, or is due an update you can easily transfer your home to a new chassis. To this end, Four Wheel Campers, established in 1972, has forged a reputation for excellence and is considered the benchmark for truck campers. The company was established in Colorado by outdoor enthusiast Dave Rowe, who wanted a camper solution that allowed him to get further off the beaten track. Subsequently, he built a hard-sided camper (with a pop-top roof to save weight) that could be mounted to the Scout, Blazer, or Bronco, and the rest is history. Five decades later the campers have remained in a constant state of evolution but the design fundamentals and core mission has remained the same. Cue today’s 2015 Four Wheel Campers Fleet, which boasts desirable factory options and a plethora of aftermarket upgrades. Highlights include a lithium house battery system, 20 gallons of freshwater (with water heater), climate control, a queen-size bed, and more. At $20,500 this camper represents impressive value when you consider that a standard Fleet new will set you back ~$30,000 (and that’s before taking into account the various premium upgrades). So, if you’re looking to transform your truck into a rolling home with a camper that’s fully equipped, four-season ready, and available with no lead time, then look no further.
