Ford E-350 4x4

I’ve been fortunate to own and travel in a wide variety of overland rigs over the years, and while no vehicle is perfect, a 4WD van is one of the best options for exploration. Living on the road, you quickly realize that the best vehicles are those that are first and foremost reliable, provide generous comfort, amenities, and living space in a modest external footprint, and are not excessive/over-specialized in any one area. A van is relatively affordable, offers a spacious, four-season-capable interior living space (with plenty of headroom when equipped with a high top or pop-top), decent payload, respectable economy and drivability, and, with aftermarket support, can be modified to match the capability of a 4WD. To this end, Ford’s Econoline is a desirable chassis for overland conversions; it’s a legendary commercial workhorse synonymous with longevity and reliability (with excellent OEM parts and service availability), enjoys extensive aftermarket support, and is one of a very select few vans with access to on-demand 4WD conversions. Cue today’s 2007 Ford E-350 XLT (185,000 miles), which boasts a U-Joint Offroad 4WD conversion, a Power Stroke diesel motor, premium aftermarket modifications, a custom camper interior, and a Sportsmobile pop-top roof. Additional highlights include a large lithium house battery system, climate control, a freshwater supply with filtration and on-demand hot water, a fully equipped galley kitchen, and much more. This stunning package underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2022 and took three years to complete, and is, for all intents and purposes, turnkey-ready to see the world. At $125,000, this is not a budget rig, but it’s half the price of other off-the-shelf 4WD van conversions and available today with no lead time.

Ford E-350 4x4From the Seller:

“I have been a boutique home builder and wanted to invest this expertise into building a van to travel around North America. I planned to only build one. The very best one that I could. I spent three years and worked with 30 different individuals to create this pinnacle rig. It’s comfortable, safe, and quiet, with all the capability and conveniences to explore. Photos, video, and paperwork are available to document the extensive build process. Currently at 185,000 miles with 25,000 miles on the conversion and recent engine work.”
