Mitsubishi Fuso

Expedition trucks are ideal for those planning a long-term trip, transitioning to life on the road, or traveling as a family. These 4WD goliaths often sit on heavy-duty commercial or military truck chassis and are over-engineered to safely carry large loads in any terrain or climate. Consequently, they’re the ideal platform for a camper or habitation box, and an ideal choice for around-the-world exploration. A wide array of suitable trucks is available for this application, but for many, the Mitsubishi Fuso 4×4 continues to set the benchmark. From the factory, this vehicle was intended for off-grid commercial applications and is appointed accordingly; it boasts a heavy-duty 4WD system, a function-first interior, a considerable payload, and a global support network. The aftermarket also favors it, with a wide array of parts, accessories, and services to further uprate this truck for exploration. Overland Journal Publisher Scott Brady states, “The Fuso is a true global platform, proven in the remote and inhospitable places of the world where road conditions change with the season, or may not exist at all. In my travels on six continents, the Fuso is always there; cruising along a highway in Chile or busting through the bushveld of Botswana.” To this end, cue today’s 2001 Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4×4, which is something of a unicorn with just 23,000 miles from new and would serve as the perfect blank canvas for a full overland build-out. This older gen is still widely considered a top choice for backcountry travel thanks to its ultra-durable build, bulletproof 3.9-liter turbo-diesel motor, field serviceability, and moddability. Simply add a camper and see the world.

“This is my 2000 Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4×4 with a 5-speed manual transmission, power windows and locks, and just 23,000 original miles! I purchased the truck years ago out west from a gold digger. This is a unicorn, and you will not find a rust-free truck of this caliber anywhere. It’s the perfect platform for an expedition build. Please call with any questions; the truck runs and operates like new.”
