Expedition trucks are a great choice for those planning a big trip, traveling as a family, or transitioning to life on the road. They remove many inconveniences of vehicle travel and instead offer many of the same conveniences and comforts as conventional housing. It’s easy to dismiss these rigs as exorbitantly expensive both to acquire and run, but this is short-sighted. In fact, these overland goliaths can be an impressive value proposition, especially when serving as a full-time home. I’m fortunate to know various working professionals and families living in expedition trucks and saving a small fortune. With the cost of living skyrocketing, living in a truck can save you money. Sure, the initial purchase price is significant, but once you own it, the running costs can be surprisingly low. After all, you’re no longer burdened with rent/mortgage and bills, and for the most part, they are totally self-contained and largely self-sustaining. Consequently, your biggest outlay is fuel, and you can manage it by adjusting your travel speed and how long you stay in one place (you can also improve this by adding a motorcycle or electric bicycle for short trips). Nonetheless, with many off-the-shelf offerings costing more than half a million dollars, you may assume the cost of entry is simply unattainable. Fear not, as there are amazing deals on the pre-owned market, and to this end, cue today’s low-mileage 1990 BMY M927A2 6×6 (22,000 miles), which originally cost $380,000 (original invoice available), but is listed today with no lead time for just $75,000. At this price, it’s an incredible value and a fraction of what you’d pay for a comparable build, yet it is in no way lacking in regard to all-terrain performance and interior comforts. This monster build is underpinned by a 1990 BMY M927A2 6×6, which was originally intended as a tactical vehicle for the military and boasts extreme all-terrain capability, field serviceability, and a function-forward interior. The chassis is topped with a four-season habitat with comforts and amenities that include climate control, a fully equipped kitchen, a dry bathroom (and a wet bathroom), a lithium power system, queen-size beds (2) and a fold-down sofa, entertainment systems, and 250 gallons of freshwater. If you’re in the market for a budget-friendly expedition rig, then look no further.

From the Seller:
“This 1990 BMY M931A2 is a 5-ton former US military vehicle that was converted to an overland-style truck with the addition of a camper cabin by Plan B Trucks of South Willard, Utah, in 2017. The camper features a galley, dinette, kitchenette, fold-down couch, two additional sleeping areas, and wet and dry baths. The seller’s father-in-law acquired the truck in 2019, and the tires were replaced in anticipation of the sale. The M939 was a 5-ton 6×6 vehicle designed in the late 1970s to supersede the M39 and M809 series of heavy trucks, and it was later offered in various configurations for use by the US military. The M931A2 was a semi-tractor variant with a fifth wheel and a 167-inch wheelbase. A Cummins 8.3-liter turbodiesel inline-six resides beneath a front-hinged clamshell hood. The engine was reportedly overhauled in 2008 under military ownership, and the starter is noted to have been replaced in 2024.”
