Arctic Trucks Built a Nissan Ariya for an Epic Pole-to-Pole Expedition

Arctic Trucks, a company specializing in vehicles designed for polar expeditions, has joined forces with Nissan’s design and engineering teams to equip the Ariya electric SUV to undertake a 16,650-mile trip from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole. The collaboration aims to bring Nissan’s cutting-edge electric technology to the extreme conditions of the Arctic.

The Ariya, which was first introduced in 2020, is a high-performance electric SUV that has been designed to offer a new level of driving experience. The collaboration between Arctic Trucks and Nissan aims to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities, particularly its performance in extreme winter conditions.

British couple Chris and Julie Ramsey hope to become the world’s first people to drive from the magnetic North to South Poles. Departing in March 2023, the couple will travel over 17,000 miles through 14 countries from the Arctic via the Pan-American highway before finally crossing to Antarctica. The expedition aims to raise awareness of electric vehicles’ critical role in reducing our carbon footprint.

Chris Ramsey, EV Expedition Leader from Pole to Pole, said,

“One of the things that underpin all the adventures we do is that we take a standard production EV and aim to make minimal changes to demonstrate its real, everyday capabilities, regardless of where you are driving it. Our Nissan Ariya is no different from the vehicle’s drivetrain, and the battery has remained factory standard, demonstrating just how capable and versatile the production Ariya is. We’ve modified the suspension and widened the wheel arches to benefit from the stable platform and support of the 39-inch BF Goodrich tires. I’m incredibly excited to get behind the wheel of what was already a brilliant vehicle but now feels equipped to take on the ends of the earth in style!”

The partnership between the two companies has resulted in a unique and innovative vehicle that can tackle even the most challenging terrains. The Ariya, with its relatively powerful electric motor coupled with e-4ORCE, Nissan’s advanced electric all-wheel-control technology, should be able to handle the challenges of the Arctic with ease, providing the team with a comfortable, reliable, and sustainable driving experience. A necessary innovation is the inclusion of a portable, renewable energy unit that will charge the Ariya in the polar regions. The towable prototype includes a lightweight wind turbine and solar panels that will take advantage of high winds and daylight hours to charge the EV’s battery when Chris and Julie stop to rest.
