Toyota continues a steady drip of teasers ahead of the official launch of the 2024 Tacoma (the launch date itself remains a mystery). In addition to portable Bluetooth tunes, a Trailhunter trim package, and hybrid drive, the Big T announced this week that its class-leading mid-size truck will also come with a manual transmission option in the fourth generation. Don’t skip leg day.
This bucks the industry-wide trend of disappearing manuals, including within Toyota’s own four-wheel drive lineup. Though, some other popular contemporary 4x4s, such as the Ford Bronco and Jeep’s Wrangler, continue to soldier on heroically with row-your-own transmission options as well. Whether the new Taco’s manual box will carry over from the third generation or be a redesigned unit is impossible to say at the moment, and how it might integrate with a hybrid powertrain is also an open question. The current six-speed is a fine shifter, if a little vague in its throws.
Another undeclared clue to the new Tacoma’s equipment list could possibly include disc brakes on the rear axle (as sharp eyes might notice in the header image on Toyota’s press page)—a first for the platform.
