Beaver Built Adventure Trailers, based in Airdrie, Alberta, is located just over an hour east of Banff National Park in central Canada’s spectacular Rocky Mountains. Robbie Cunningham, one of the co-founders of Beaver Built, created the company out of necessity. He was looking for an off-road trailer that was comfortable for backcountry adventures and rugged enough to hand down to his children, but he couldn’t find exactly what he was looking for at a price that felt reasonable. Instead of settling for something that wasn’t ideal, Robbie set out to design exactly what he wanted, ultimately creating three different off-road trailers: the Wapos, Mahkesis, and Muskwa.
It all Starts with the Beaver Built Wapos Chassis
The entire line of off-road trailers from Beaver Built Adventure Trailers starts with their Wapos chassis, a compact and lightweight galvanized steel frame which is paired with an industry-standard Cruisemaster CRS2 gas strut and spring suspension that Beaver Built says can go “anywhere your tow vehicle can go.” The Wapos chassis also features 10-inch electric disc brakes and is offered in two bolt patterns: 6 on 5.5 (for Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, and Chev/GMC) or 5 on 5 (for Jeeps).
The Wapos comes standard with a front cargo box, a driver’s side compartment (designed to fit a 57-liter Snowmaster refrigerator), a passenger-side compartment, and a rear compartment with a tailgate-style door. It offers a large rear-access pantry drawer for storing cooking and camping supplies. The Wapos also comes standard with an extruded aluminum roof rack that has an adjustable height, allowing users to store cargo on top of the trailer, underneath the rack (if, for instance, you have a rooftop tent mounted). The roof rack features slotted recessed rails on the top and sides for mounting accessories and to facilitate securing cargo.
Mahkesis: Stepping things up a level from the Wapos, the Mahkesis overland trailer comes with all of the standard Wapos features as well as side storage boxes mounted above each fender along with a tongue deck box.
Muskwah: The full-featured Muskwah is the most full-featured trailer by Beaver Built, featuring a wider front cargo box (than the Wapos or Mahkesis) and a driver’s side compartment that will accommodate a 67-liter Snomaster. Additionally, the Muskwah offers built-in wet storage compartments in the rear corners and air ride suspension (eliminating the need for jacks).
Additionally, all Beaver Built trailers come standard with Yokohama G015 30×10.5 R15 tires, Vision Wheels 398 Manx 15×8 (offered in both bolt patterns mentioned above), and a 2-inch ball receiver with the option to upgrade to the Cruisemaster D035 articulating coupler, which featured an integrated parking brake. While pricing is still being finalized, the basic Wapos trailer will start under the $20K (Canadian dollar) mark.
