Before we dive into one of the most impressive fifth-gen 4Runners we’ve featured, I want to take a step back and share why I believe Toyota continues to set the benchmark for overland vehicles. Whether it’s the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, or indeed the 4Runner, the build quality and reliability are second to none. I’ve owned various 4WDs, but a few years back I invested in a 70 Series, and it’s been a transformative experience. Whether crossing Europe multiple times, traversing ~1,000 miles of trails in the Balkans last autumn, or driving 15 hours through the night this weekend to view a house in Scotland, the Land Cruiser has asked for nothing more than routine servicing. It allows me to focus on the adventure rather than the endless mechanical issues and constant bills I’ve experienced with other vehicles.
It’s for these reasons and more that XOverland has utilized Toyotas almost exclusively for its global expeditions, with the latest fleet completing a 25,000-mile cross-continent journey—including the West Coast of Africa—without issue (watch the Milestones Expedition on YouTube).
All of this is to say that if you’re serious about seeing the world, you can’t go wrong with a Toyota, and to this end the fifth-gen 4Runner is legendary. It’s the best-selling generation to date and is, for all intents and purposes, a vehicle that can be driven straight from the dealership around the world (as discussed on the Overland Journal podcast).
Cue today’s exceptionally low-mileage 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium (15,000 miles), which has been completely reimagined from the ground up with premium aftermarket parts and assembled by industry professionals. The build specifications on this rig have to be seen to be believed. More than $124,000 has been invested to create the ultimate overland-ready 4Runner (full build sheet available upon request). Consequently, at $79,000 it’s exceptional value and is barely run in. Finally, the fifth-gen 4Runner, with its bulletproof 1GR-FE naturally aspirated V6, is the most field-proven iteration. For serious exploration, I’d choose this over the sixth generation, which is still in its infancy.
From the Seller:
“Built from a 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium with only 15,000 miles on the odometer, this 4Runner isn’t a collection of budget bolt-ons—it’s a ground-up, no-compromise build assembled by people who know the platform inside and out. This build represents a genuine, documented investment of nearly $125,000 in the vehicle, parts, tax, and over 185 hours of professional labor. To put that in perspective, the modifications alone—parts, tax, and labor—total more than $75,000. I’ve loved every mile of overlanding in this truck, but I’m transitioning to trailer-based camping, and a rig this capable deserves an owner who will actually use everything it’s capable of. Asking $79,000—a fraction of what’s been invested and a rare chance to own what may be one of the most thoroughly and thoughtfully built 4Runners in the state of Texas. Full itemized build sheet available to serious buyers. Come see it, drive it, and appreciate the details in person.”
