A couple of years ago, I purchased an HZJ78 Land Cruiser, and it would be an understatement to say that ownership has been positively life-changing. The 70 Series has always been my dream overland rig, and after several years and multiple international trips, it has surpassed all expectations. The first time I sat behind the wheel, it was clear that this was not a 4WD primarily targeted at the recreational market but rather a purpose-built utilitarian vehicle engineered to meet the extreme demands of the military, frontline agencies, and the commercial sector. In all regards, it’s over-engineered to meet the rigors of backcountry punishment and is renowned for its exceptional durability and longevity. During my ownership, I’ve done nothing but general maintenance, and on my most recent trip alone, I covered almost 1,000 miles of trails in Croatia without issue. There are many reasons this model is beloved, but first and foremost, it’s a vehicle you can count on— whether on local trails or traversing the Mongolian Steppe. I’m fortunate working at the Overland Collective to see thousands of dialed travel vehicles, but the 70 Series is the only one I’d trust implicitly for the most ambitious trips. To this end, cue today’s 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Double Cab HZJ79 (50,xxx kilometer/31,xxx miles), which has been meticulously maintained and boasts the nigh-on indestructible 1HZ diesel motor, premium modifications, and is topped with a Summit Expedition tray and a fully equipped canopy. At such low mileage, this vehicle is a unicorn even before you consider the extensive top-tier, upgrades. Thus, at $80,000 this package represents an impressive value and is available now with no lead time.

From the Seller:
“This is my 2001 RHD HZJ79 Series Land Cruiser, imported from Japan in 2023 with just 6,500 kilometers. Powered by the legendary Toyota 1HZ 4.2 liter naturally aspirated inline-six diesel, known for its durability, longevity, and mechanical simplicity (often running well past 500,000 kilometers with routine maintenance). Built to tour with my family with a focus on OEM aesthetics and attention to detail. In its previous life it was a Japanese prefecture fire marshal unit. Why are we selling? We’re changing direction due to a growing family (recently welcomed our third). I’m not in a rush and I’m happy to wait for the right owner. This truck becomes eligible for US import under the 25-year rule in March 2026. The current plan is to have it on display (and for sale) at the 2026 PNW Overland Expo in Oregon at the Summit Expedition Trucks booth, and I’m happy to coordinate pickup there. A lot of time and attention has gone into this build, right down to handmade imported leather keychains from Japan. Happy to answer questions and provide specific photos/videos for serious buyers. An absolute pleasure to own and drive.”
