1990 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ75 Troopy :: Featured Classified

Toyota overland build

The Troopy is widely considered a pinnacle overland platform and remains one of the most desirable vehicles for serious international trips. It was not primarily engineered for the recreational market, but rather for commercial, agricultural, and military applications, and is subsequently over-engineered to a degree not seen on most civilian vehicles. With its heavy-duty, body-on-frame architecture, 4WD system, solid axles, considerable payload and towing capacity, utilitarian interior, and rugged factory options such as dual fuel tanks, it’s perfectly suited to the rigors of the backcountry. I’d always dreamed of owning a Troopy, and in 2024, I finally committed. Mine had already traveled around much of the world, but from the moment I turned the key, it never let me down (including trips from the UK to the top of Norway and most recently, 1,000 miles of trails in the Balkans). This experience is not unique, which is why the Troopy continues to be the rig of choice for serious overland trips. With this in mind, cue today’s 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ75 Troopy (308,635 kilometers on the chassis), which boasts a 1HD-T turbo-diesel conversion, a plethora of premium modifications, Goose Gear interior, and an Alu-Cab Hercules pop-top roof. This is not just a proof of concept but a real-world proven package that has already completed a two-year journey along the Pan-American Highway and most recently enjoyed a two-month road trip through the American West. In addition, it has been meticulously maintained and recently had a timing belt replaced (see the original listing for full details). If you’re looking for the ultimate overlander for both domestic and international travel, then look no further. Learn more about this no-expense-spared build on the IH8MUD forum.

Toyota overland buildFrom the Seller:

This 1990 Troopy has proven itself where it counts. The previous owner completed a two-year journey from Argentina back to the US without issue. Upon purchase, I immediately took it on a two-month road trip through the American West—also zero problems and with two mountain bikes attached to the back. It was a blast passing by Sprinter vans to some truly remote campsites. It’s reliable, tough, and turnkey-ready for whatever you throw at it. The 1HD-T engine proved to be extremely reliable, and having one trusted mechanic in Portland handle all major work means the rig has been maintained consistently and to a high standard. The previous owner reported changing the oil every 3,000 kilometers—a practice I’ve continued since purchasing it. I’ve added key upgrades, including a 300-watt solar panel, a new lithium battery for coach functions, and a Victron Orion charge controller for true off-grid reliability. Some of my favorite features include the spare fuel tank for extended range, a 30-gallon water tank, color-changing LED interior strip lights, and the outside cook table that makes camp setup effortless. Though I came nowhere near pushing the rig to its limit, I felt I could have comfortably gone at least a week on water and power at the same base camp. I’m selling due to changing life plans that won’t allow me to take it on extended travel anymore. Mechanically sound with comprehensive service records—no project work needed, just fuel up and start your adventure. Registered in Oregon but currently located in South Carolina.
