The Range Rover Classic is an automotive icon, and with aftermarket support, can be transformed into a formidable overland rig. Due to its rarity, it’s not commonplace on our forum, but there have been a number of adventure-upfitted offerings listed, including this 1972, 1992 SWB, and 1995 LWB camper conversion. I’m a hopeless romantic who has lived and traveled in a decrepit 1986 VW Syncro for more than a decade, so I will put aside my rose-tinted glasses and be objective about the realities of owning a vintage Range Rover. Like my Syncro, it’s important to recognize that the initial purchase price is just the beginning. To make this vehicle a dependable travel companion, you’re going to have to address known model issues with the support of the aftermarket. However, if you’re willing to go through some growing pains, the end results will be a reliable, go-anywhere vehicle that you know inside out (important for remote travel), and it will turn more heads than just about any modern 4WD. A great case in point is the adventures of David Steca of Only a Roadtrip Away, who has spent years traveling extensively through Europe and beyond in this truly one-of-one Range Rover Classic. Cue today’s 1992 Land Rover Classic (262,000 miles), which showcases a plethora of premium upgrades and heaps of recent maintenance. At $12,500, it’s a lot of bang for your buck and a fraction of the price of a used Defender and (sorry, Graeme Bell) far more charismatic! From the Seller:
“This Range Rover is a good running example, and I use it for running into town, driving to the airport, and on wheeling/mountain adventures. Since I purchased it, I have changed all the fluids with the exception of the coolant, and replaced the brake master, distributor, spark plugs, wires, air filter, front pads and rotors, and power steering lines. The body and frame are in good condition with minimal rust for a Classic, with the exception of the front inner fenders and the front wells (this is quite common), and a spot on the rear passenger quarter. The headliner has recently been replaced, and the seats are in good condition.”
