Alu-Cab New Modular Systems Expands Its Overland Ecosystem

South African manufacturer Alu-Cab continues to expand its lineup with new offerings tailored to the needs of modern overlanders. Each component has been designed with compatibility within the Alu-Cab range in mind, a range that allows overlanders to start small and expand their setup as needed. From quick weekend escapes to longer backcountry expeditions, the products generally work together to provide shelter, storage, and flexibility in a compact and modular package. Rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all solution, the designers have focused on products that adapt to different vehicles and styles of travel. Personally, I am excited to see the awesome innovation that is the TT-4S RTT. Having spent almost every day of five years traveling Africa and South America with my wife and two kids over a decade ago, living in one large rooftop tent, I recognize that this tent would have been a game changer, as I am sure it will be for traveling families today.

RT-4S Hard-shell Rooftop Tent

The Alu-Cab RT-4S is a four-sleeper hard-shell rooftop tent that significantly expands usable space without adding excessive weight or height. It rethinks space efficiency through a side-opening, flip-out sleeping section supported by an internal telescopic ladder. Offered as a standalone alternative to the ModCap Family Camper, the RT-4S provides over 4.5 square meters of sleeping area and accommodates four adults comfortably. It is mountable on SUVs or canopy roofs and can be ordered to open to either the driver’s or passenger’s side.

The integrated ladder supports up to 150 kilograms and stows internally when closed. The tent includes dual-layer UV-resistant ripstop canvas, built-in ventilation and heater ports, USB and Type-C power outlets, dual-color LED lighting, a marine-grade PVC skylight, and provisions for solar power integration. A family-sized rooftop tent offers the advantage of requiring only one tent for the entire group, keeping everyone together and secure at night in a comfortable, enclosed space. It often leaves enough room on the roof for a compact rack or load bars to carry additional gear such as camping crates. Even couples may appreciate the extra interior space, particularly those who are taller or prefer more room to stretch out.

ModCap Compact Camper

Alu-Cab’s ModCap Compact camper delivers a streamlined overland module that combines camper functionality with daily usability. It is built upon the trusted ModCap canopy platform. It features a zero-overhang design, keeping the profile low by only 70 millimeters above its base and shedding approximately 50 kilograms compared to the two-sleeper version. This ultra-compact form allows for maximal roof packing area without compromising vehicle garage clearance or maneuverability. The unit accommodates two sleepers and allows full internal tent access without requiring a ladder. A removable section of the mattress packs away into a bag to enable this low silhouette while still preserving comfort and functionality. Integrated lighting, USB, and solar-ready wiring are built into the frame, and storage accessories such as a mattress bag and roof-mounted MOLLE plates are included.

With a static roof load rating of 200 kilograms and a capacity of up to 250 kilograms, including bedding, plus a fold-out section rated to hold 100 kilograms, the Compact camper balances weight and utility effectively. Alu-Cab designed this model for users who prioritize agility and multifunctionality, enabling seamless transition between workweek practicality and weekend camping without compromising on packing space or comfort. It is scheduled to ship in late 2025, and prospective buyers can pre-register for availability updates.

Drive-Off Base

Alu-Cab’s Drive-Off base transforms any existing ModCap or canopy camper into a slide-off unit that restores full truck bed access when not in use. Designed for compatibility across the ModCap lineup, it features a sturdy vinyl floor, four side storage pockets, and a quickmount installation system using M12 eye bolts. The expandable, modular solution enables users to easily slide off the fully equipped camper, allowing the truck to operate unencumbered for daily driving, work, or gear transport.

Users detach the unit via four mounting points by loosening the eyebolts, attaching chains and jacking feet, and lifting it clear of the tray. While the initial process may require time, it becomes quicker with familiarity. The Drive-Off base targets ModCap and canopy camper owners who want the flexibility to detach their camping setup for daily use and store it separately when not traveling.

Camper Trax Side Table

The Alu-Cab Camper Trax side table provides a dual-function work surface and MaxTrax recovery board storage that mounts easily to ModCap and canopy camper models. It drops down quickly and does not obstruct side door access. The table measures 1,535 by 550 millimeters and supports up to 10 kilograms over its 0.546-square-meter surface. It secures up to four full-size MaxTrax boards, allowing roof space to remain clear. Adjustable tension straps enable stable use even on uneven terrain. Designed to optimize camp workflows, it eliminates the need for separate storage or folding tables while preserving full access to the camper door.

Slimline Roof Box

The Alu-Cab Slimline roof box is a low-profile storage solution constructed from aluminum for durability in rain, dust, and rough terrain. It offers 182 liters (approximately 192 quarts) of internal capacity and weighs around 16 kilograms (35 pounds), while integrated roof rails support an additional 10 kilograms (approximately) of accessories. The box features a carpeted base, multi-positional cam-stays to hold the lid at various angles, and an interchangeable hinge configuration for left- or right-side opening. A positive-pressure ventilation system helps prevent condensation inside, and the compression push-button lock secures the lid tightly. Designed to fit a wide range of vehicles from compact SUVs to overland trucks, it combines a weatherproof seal with easy access and modular mounting options.
