Toyota 4Runner overland

The 4Runner is undoubtedly one of the most popular 4WDs on our forum, with recent offerings including this 1995 SR5, 2005, and 2006. It’s a vehicle synonymous with longevity, durability, reliability, and capability. Cue today’s 2005 Toyota 4Runner (211,000 miles), which showcases the desirable V8 motor and a plethora of premium upgrades. Publisher Scott Brady recently published Celebrating 40 Years of Toyota 4Runner and discusses the merits of each iteration, including today’s fourth-gen model. “The 4th Gen was the first test vehicle ever loaned to Expedition Portal … the images from that loan were featured in numerous magazines and in the ARB product catalog. That 4Runner served as another turning point, being part of the inspiration for us starting the Overland Journal magazine.” It was also the first model offered with the coveted Toyota/Lexus 4.7-liter V8, which provides plenty of power and is exceptionally long-lived (with many owners exceeding half a million miles). Subsequently, the fourth-gen remains a favorite for overland builds, with inspiring builds from Garrett Logan, Peach State Overland, and Trail Runner Customs

The 4Runner is fitted with a 4.7-liter motor that produces 270 horsepower, 320 pound-feet of torque, and returns a combined 16 mpg. A long-lived V8 is matched with excellent capability thanks to a body-on-frame design, 4WD, high and low range, a center locking differential, armor, and a lifted and uprated suspension. These backcountry credentials are balanced with a well-equipped interior with driver comforts that include:
