The Ford F Series has been the top-selling truck in the USA for the last 46 years (and the best-selling vehicle overall in the US for the last 41 years), with almost 650,000 units driven off showroom floors in 2022 alone. In 2024, Ford is set to release its latest iteration of the F-150 truck, focusing on practicality, functionality, and connectivity, which some customers will likely appreciate more than others. The new model, available early in the year, aims to provide users with purposeful features and cutting-edge technology as Ford prioritizes delivering a rugged and reliable vehicle in a bid to hold onto the king of the truck crown.
The 2024 F-150 lineup is diverse, catering to a wide range of needs. From the basic XL trim to the high-end Platinum Plus, models are designed to appeal to off-road enthusiasts, including the Tremor, Raptor, and Raptor R. Under the hood, a variety of engine options will be available, including the 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 3.5-liter EcoBoost, 3.5-liter PowerBoost, 3.5-liter High Output (F-150 Raptor), 5.0-liter V8, and the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 (F-150 Raptor R).
These engines are based on a robust and proven foundation, featuring a fully boxed high-strength steel frame and a military-grade aluminum alloy body, providing what Ford claims are best-in-class payload and towing capacity (up to 13,500 pounds towing and a maximum payload of 2,455 pounds). The F-150’s foray into hybrid technology has been successful, with Ford leading in the full-hybrid pickup truck market. The 2024 model year sees a doubling of hybrid truck production, making advanced technology accessible to more customers. Cost parity with traditional engines ensures that customers can enjoy the benefits of a hybrid powertrain without a premium price tag.
Andrew Frick, vice president, Sales, and Trucks, Ford Blue revealed,
“We’re making hybrid more accessible to our customers, giving them the power of choice by offering it at the same price as the 3.5-liter EcoBoost. This is the latest example of Ford democratizing technology for all truck customers. We did it with EcoBoost engines and with high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy bodies for greater capability, and now we’re doing it with PowerBoost Hybrid.”
To improve the F150’s overall reliability and hopefully knock the Ram 1500 off the dependability pedestal, Ford has invested in extensive testing, totaling over 3.75 million customer-equivalent miles, in labs, proving grounds, and the “harshest real-world conditions in North America.” The truck has apparently been pushed to its limits, enduring extreme temperatures, rough terrain, heavy loads, and long-distance hauling.
The F150 is designed not only to be tough but also smart. It can export electric power to keep job site tools running, assist in trailer hitching, provide hands-free highway driving with Ford BlueCruise, and offer a tailgate with optimized access. A class-exclusive 5G LTE modem makes much of this possible, enabling faster mapping, Wi-Fi, and software updates. One standout feature of the F150 is the Pro Power Onboard, offering up to a maximum of 7.2 kilowatts of onboard generator, which can charge our battery systems or power our fridges, lights, laptops, and power tools directly. An updated digital interface makes monitoring available power easier, accessible through SYNC 4 or the FordPass app.
Connectivity extends to fleet management through FordPass and Ford Pro Telematics, offering valuable insights to improve productivity and uptime. Safety and driver-assist features have not been overlooked. The 2024 F-150 comes equipped with ten standard driver-assist features, including Pre-Collision Assist, Lane Keeping System, and Blind Spot Information System. Advanced features like Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Pro Trailer Hitch Assist enhance productivity, while options like Ford BlueCruise and a 360-degree camera provide additional convenience. In North America, the 2024 F-150 is poised to make history as the first vehicle to offer Ford Stolen Vehicle Services. This innovative connected service is designed to assist in recovering a Ford owner’s stolen vehicle, provided the customer chooses to activate it. By utilizing precise location data sourced directly from the vehicle, this feature aims to provide an additional layer of reassurance and security for vehicle owners. We can’t help but wonder how far this service will extend beyond major routes and whether there will eventually be search and rescue location-sharing services for those who regularly head far from the beaten track.
Inside the cabin, a 12-inch LCD touchscreen with SYNC 4 is now standard, complemented by a 12-inch cluster screen behind the steering wheel. Ford promises ongoing improvements and new features through over-the-air software updates, ensuring the F-150 remains current.
The 2024 model introduces the Pro Access Tailgate for easy access to the truck bed, providing a seamless tailgate experience. It’s the only pickup in its class to offer a 100-degree fully opened integrated swing gate and a conventional drop-down tailgate.
