The Toyota Land Cruiser 78, known as the Troop Carrier (or “Troopy”), is arguably one of the greatest overland platforms in existence—and my personal favorite. This legendary vehicle combines the Land Cruiser’s fabled reliability and capability with an extended wheelbase that provides just enough space for a comfortable camper interior (especially when combined with a pop-up or hard-top roof). The Troopy is fitted with the legendary 1HZ 6-cylinder diesel motor, which in stock form produces 133 horsepower and 209 pound-feet of torque (although today’s example has been uprated with a turbo). A bulletproof engine is matched with excellent go-anywhere capability thanks to 4WD, factory full floating rear axle, high and low range, snorkel, and more. These vehicles are not luxurious and are intentionally utilitarian, so don’t expect many driver comforts (although it does feature air conditioning).
