There’s no doubt that Toyota is getting excited about overlanding. This year’s 2022 SEMA show included real-world-proven Toyota builds from Expedition Overland and Patriot Campers featured front and center in one of the largest booths on the show floor. Toyota also unveiled the Trailhunter, a new dedicated overland effort, along with their accessory program to help adventurers outfit their new vehicle purchases ready to go with gear straight from the showroom floor.
Equally encouraging was to hear Lexus openly recognize the popularity of the LX and GX platforms among overlanders and outdoor enthusiasts. So much so that Lexus debuted two purpose-built concept vehicles at SEMA.
The Lexus LX600 Alpine Lifestyle Concept
Representing their pinnacle of SUV Luxury, Lexus appointed this LX600 with a body armor package and low-profile aluminum roof rack from Dissent Off-Road, carbon fiber over fenders, an integrated front recovery winch, Rigid LED lighting, and an ARB awning. A TrekboxX storage system in the rear cargo area rounds out the build with a focus on having a kitchen setup and gear storage for everything from tailgating, to lunch and refreshments at the trailhead. The Alpine Lifestyle Concept celebrates the rugged nature and durability of the LX600 while supporting the idea of enjoying the outdoors longer, and in more comfort.
The Lexus GX460 Overland Concept
Furthering the brand’s enthusiasm for overlanding is this incredibly stylish and capable machine. The angles of the front end and the scallops of the grille make it look fast standing still. Lexus worked with the legendary Cruiser Outfitters to create a bold example of what we see so many GX owners strive for. A Warn winch is hidden in the front bumper, and Toyo Open Country tires have been fitted to factory wheels. A Prinsu rack supports LED lighting, Alubox hard cases, traction boards, and a Yakima roof top tent. Underneath, an Old Man Emu suspension provides additional ground clearance and an increased attack angle. With the departure of the Land Cruiser from the US market, Lexus is providing a welcome solution of luxury and capability for overladers to adventure more, and journey further. The one thing that really stands out about these Lexus concept builds, is their incorporation of aftermarket products from the overlanding space. For example, using an Old Man Emu suspension to gain ground clearance rather than just modifying in-house Lexus suspension parts, or the use of the TrekboxX cargo system instead of building a one-off car-show solution. Lexus, and Toyota, are showing their commitment to overlanding and to the community that has been built around it.
