BuenaVantura: A Vanlife & Overland Gathering at Emma Wood State Beach, Ventura, California

buenavantura

The Journal of Lost Time’s newest meetup in its Lost Places event series, BuenaVantura, will take place at Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura, California, from March 25th through 27th.

Billed as a celebration of gathering in beautiful places, founder Josiah Roe described the event to me as a “love letter to the city of Ventura”. He went on to explain that the whole idea of this event series is to invert the event paradigm.

“The point is to experience the place and even stay for a week before and after,” he suggested, “to travel slower and get lost in some of the most beautiful places on earth that we might forget about as we race by on the interstate.”

BuenaVantura will be an intimate event that is limited to sixty vehicles at the primary group camping site at Emma Woods State Beach. For vehicles over twenty feet long, there are other camping options nearby.

The ultimate goal of BuenaVantura is to facilitate social connections between like-minded travelers, but the event also aims to highlight the community where it takes place. Over the course of the weekend, there are a variety of activities spread across the Ventura area including brewery tours, bike rides, and more. Visit their things to do page for a full breakdown of the weekend’s events.

The Lost Places Event Series

The last event in the Lost Places event series, Escapar La Baja (video below), saw over 250 vehicles deliver 500+ travelers to the warm sands of Playa El Tecolote, just outside La Paz. The atmosphere was eclectic, playful, and welcomed people from all walks of life.

“Though it was our first time crossing into Baja via van, we never had to worry about where to stay on our slow roll down the peninsula. So many resources were provided for Escapar by [The Journal of] Lost Time and the community and kept us safe along the way. Once we made it to the event, we connected with so many other vanlifers and got swept up in the current of the energy and crowd that had gathered to share the incredible weekend.” Simone Arora

“Josiah, Morgan, and the rest of the Escapar a La Baja crew could not have made us feel any more welcome! They are a ray of warm light that allows for anyone else in their vicinity to shine brightly. They created a space that was beautiful and safe, encouraging the community to be their true selves and share their greatest talents with one another leaving us with more love in our hearts, more adventure in our spirits, and more memories to hold onto.” Olivia DiMauro

Additional events planned for 2022 include:

  • Weird Wild West // Bisbee, Arizona
  • Wind River Rally // Lander, Wyoming
  • Red Rock and Roll // Moab, Utah
  • Holy Toledo // The Oregon Coast
