Featured Overland Trailer :: HutRV Dekpod

The HutRV Dekpod is a new style of expanding overland trailer slated for release in 2022. The stand-out design principle behind this trailer is simple yet clever: a pivoting fold-out kitchen area that rotates open onto the trailer’s drawbar and tongue. It’s a great reminder that there’s still plenty of room for overland trailer innovation, even with straight-forward designs such as this.

Lately, there’s been a bit of a renaissance with trailer slide and expandable living space innovation. We’ve covered a couple of these new designs, including Tesla’s Cyber Truck-specific Cyberlndr, as well as the Whale concept camper, which won a Red Dot Design Award. But unlike both of those examples, the HutRV team already has a fully-functional Dekpod camper prototype, with production models scheduled for release in 2022.

HutRV Dekpod 54 Design Elements

The modular, expandable kitchen of the Dekpod 54 is what makes this overland camper stand out from the competition, but it also features a pop-top roof, as well as an ensuite bathroom, and fully-enclosed sleeping quarters. This design delivers a compact trailering experience with a comfortable, weather-proof habitat.

Taken directly from the HutRV website, the new Dekpod overland trailer provides:

  • Quick Opening – Simply lower the front floor/guard and swing out the side, expanding the module
  • Unrivaled Access –  Easy access to tow vehicle rear storage from the expanded floor area
  • Efficient Storage – Clamshell design enables maximum use of available space and easy packing
  • Ablutions Ready – Sump floor facilities collection of greywater when shower/toilet incorporated
  • Off-Road Friendly – Drawbar clearance is maintained along with integrated stone/mud front guards
  • Scaleable & Versatile – Able to vary size and features for multiple trailer types & applications

As a full-time trailer occupant myself, I am really intrigued by the Dekpod design, specifically the fact that you get a fully-enclosed kitchen, sleeping cabin, and bathroom. I see these three elements as being crucial, given the cost of an off-road-ready trailer (MSRP of the Dekpod has not yet been released). I also really like the peace of mind that Dekpod’s dual axels will provide when towing the trailer over long distances.

Aside from wondering what this slick little habitat will cost, where it will be manufactured, and if we’ll see one in North America, I am enthusiastic that it could be a success if executed well. Ultimately, I hope to encounter one at the next Overland Expo (or sooner, if I’m lucky).
