F-450

The F-450 is a great choice for heavier overland builds, with recent offerings including this 2004, 2008, and 2019 Limited Extreme Duty. From the factory, this full-size pickup was engineered to endure the rigors of heavy industry and is subsequently well-appointed for overlanding with a powerful diesel motor, 4WD, solid axles, and considerable payload. In addition, Ford’s F-Series enjoys huge aftermarket support, which means this rugged platform can be reimagined from the ground up for adventure. If you’d like a better idea of how this big rig can be outfitted for exploration, then check out inspiring builds from CJC Offroad, Bowen Customs, and EC Offroad. Cue today’s 1999 Ford F-450 4×4 (84,500 miles), which showcases premium upgrades, a super single wheel conversion, and is topped with a habitation box (previously an ambulance). At $26,500, this has to be one of the best value rigs we’ve showcased, and with a little TLC would serve as a fantastic blank canvas for a full expedition build-out.

Ford F-450From the Seller:

“In the last two years, I replaced both batteries, the starter, front shocks, front brake calipers, brake hoses, hard brake lines, water pump, performed a coolant flush, and fitted a new exhaust back pressure valve. I’ve owned this truck for over five years; you can reference my Expedition Portal build thread for details. The build was inspired after seeing EarthRoamers and EarthCruisers on a trip out west. I wanted to build a large expedition truck on a budget with more room than my Quigley 4×4 van. The interior is stock, a blank canvas for a camper build-out. The existing interior cabinets, and especially the exterior compartments, are awesome for primitive camping. I learned a lot building this truck, and I’m proud of how it turned out.”
