1986 Vanagon Syncro :: Classifieds

A Volkswagen T3 Syncro on the beach

The Vanagon is a travel icon and the 4WD Syncro variant is considered by many as the most desirable model. This rugged go-anywhere van was uprated from the factory with a 4WD system from the engineers at Steyr-Daimler-Puch and is very capable. In recent years the cost of these automotive unicorns skyrocketed with some pristine examples selling in excess of $100,000. Fortunately, prices have since dropped significantly with offerings listed to the forum that include a $22,000 1991, a $35,000 1987, and a $40,000 1985 Doka. It’s important to recognize that these vehicles are the best part of forty years old and will require considerable investment to ensure reliability. However, once sorted they make an excellent international travel companion as demonstrated by the rigs from Alika Vaquer, Guanabana Overland, and yours truly. Today’s 1986 offering features a desirable Subaru conversion, rebuilt transmission, premium modifications, and a tasteful camper interior. Furthermore, this example has been driven from Alaska to Belize, which says a lot about the work that has already been invested into this vehicle.

From the Seller:

I find that I don’t use this much anymore, I’d like something a bit bigger. I have driven this Syncro from Alaska to Belize, and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Very reliable.”

The stock WBX is notoriously underpowered so today’s Syncro has been uprated with a 2.5-liter engine from a Subaru Impreza (a common conversion). A desirable motor is matched with excellent capability thanks to 4WD, rear locker, decoupler, “Gelande” crawling gear, underside protection, and more. From the factory, the Syncro is decidedly utilitarian and function-first with limited comforts (this model does feature captain chairs).
