Volkswagen Expands the ID. Buzz Lineup for 2027 With New Tourer Camping-oriented Model

Volkswagen has announced the return of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz for the 2027 model year after a brief hiatus in 2026, introducing a revised trim structure and a new camping-focused Tourer variant aimed at buyers seeking a more versatile electric van experience. While the retro-inspired ID. Buzz has already attracted considerable attention for its design and heritage references to the classic Type 2 Microbus, its new Tourer 4Motion signals Volkswagen’s intention to position the vehicle more directly within the growing adventure and lifestyle travel market.

The updated lineup now consists of the Pro S rear-wheel-drive, Pro S 4Motion, Tourer 4Motion, and range-topping Pro S Plus 4Motion trims. Of these, the Tourer emerges as the most travel-focused configuration, building on the Pro S 4Motion platform with a collection of features designed to support overnight stays and lightweight camping. That is not to say owners will not attempt ambitious journeys in the ID. Buzz—some almost certainly will—but it is important to recognize that the vehicle was conceived primarily as a lifestyle-oriented electric van rather than a purpose-built long-distance expedition platform.

The Tourer package draws inspiration from Volkswagen’s European “Good Night Package,” adapting the concept for the North American market. Central to the package is a fold-out mattress and sleeping platform that converts the rear cabin into a compact sleeping space. Volkswagen also includes integrated window blinds, front-window ventilation panels, and software-driven “Overnight Mode,” which modifies aspects of the vehicle’s interior and exterior behavior to better support overnight stays. Additional equipment includes an exterior table and chairs, reinforcing the vehicle’s positioning as a practical minimalist travel platform rather than simply an electric family van.

Beyond the camping equipment, the Tourer receives a number of premium upgrades over the standard Pro S 4Motion. These include captain’s chaiFinterrs in the second row, a retractable tow hitch, area view camera functionality, an electrochromic smart roof, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black disc styling elements. The combination gives the Tourer a more upscale and purpose-built appearance while maintaining the unmistakable proportions and design language of the ID. Buzz.

The ID. Buzz occupies a somewhat unique position in the North American market. Few manufacturers currently offer a fully electric van with such a strong focus on lifestyle travel and flexible interior utility. While traditional camper vans remain popular, particularly within overland and vanlife circles, most still rely on gasoline or diesel powertrains. Volkswagen appears to be wagering that a segment of buyers will accept the limitations that continue to accompany EV travel in exchange for the quiet operation, smooth low-speed drivability, and distinctive character of an electric adventure vehicle. There is also the simple financial reality that avoiding constant fuel stops can significantly reduce operating costs over time, particularly for travelers covering long distances. The more miles accumulated behind the wheel of the ID. Buzz, the stronger its value proposition potentially becomes.

For many consumers, the appeal of the ID. Buzz lies as much in its emotional connection to Volkswagen’s historic Microbus as in its technical specifications. The new two-tone paint offerings continue to reinforce that identity. Volkswagen has simplified the color palette for 2027, now offering only two-tone paint schemes. Among the most notable is the Candy White over Cherry Red combination paired with white wheels, a configuration that closely references classic Type 2 models from the 1960s and 1970s. The ID. Buzz seems an extrovert’s vehicle, yearning for an energetic conversation around a gas firepit or an electric candle.

All 2027 ID. Buzz models benefit from Volkswagen’s latest ID.S 6 infotainment software. The Android-based system introduces a redesigned home screen navigation intended to improve usability and reduce input time, along with revised vehicle settings menus for easier access to interior functions. Volkswagen is also introducing a one-year In-Vehicle Premium subscription trial that includes access to a new App Store with integrated third-party applications such as YouTube and Spotify.

From a practical standpoint, Volkswagen has also added a North American charging system adapter, allowing improved compatibility with Tesla-style charging infrastructure across the United States and Canada. One-pedal driving functionality has also been added across the lineup, reflecting the growing expectation for regenerative braking systems that simplify urban driving.

Although the ID. Buzz Tourer is unlikely to replace a traditional long-range overland vehicle for extended remote travel, but it represents an interesting shift in how manufacturers are approaching electric recreational mobility. Rather than directly competing with large camper vans or off-road expedition rigs, Volkswagen appears to be targeting shorter-duration travel, regional road trips, and campground-based adventures where charging access is increasingly available.

In that context, the Tourer may ultimately resonate most strongly with buyers seeking a practical daily driver that can also double as a compact weekend camper without the need for a dedicated RV or significant aftermarket modification. While the ID. Buzz was not conceived as a globe-trotting expedition platform, it’s easy to imagine adventurous owners pushing far beyond its intended use. One could easily envision driving the vehicle as far south as the road allows and, with sufficient patience and planning, perhaps even reaching Ushuaia.
