Video of the Week :: The Grizzly Torque

In 1957, Canadians Bristol Foster and Robert Bateman traveled 60,000 kilometers through 19 countries and four continents in their Land Rover Series I nicknamed The Grizzly Torque. The focus of their trip was a result of their backgrounds (Foster is a biologist and ecologist, and Bateman is a well-known Canadian artist and naturalist), so they spent much of their time painting, filming, and photographing the surrounding people and landscapes.

After the pair returned to Canada, The Grizzly Torque was sold to a student in Texas and eventually made its way back to British Columbia, where it sat at a farm for nearly a decade. This is the story of how the Grizzly Torque was rediscovered, restored, and reunited with its former owners years after its unforgettable journey around the world.

Ashley Giordano’s first foray into overland travel involved a 48,800-kilometer journey from Canada to Argentina with her husband, Richard, in their well-loved but antiquated 1990 Toyota Pickup. Currently cruising along the iconic Silk Road in a 2008 Toyota Tundra, her full-time navigator duties are rewarded with bowls of plov and lagman noodles, hikes in the Tian Shan, and countless cups of fragrant Tashkent tea. As senior editor at Overland Journal, you can usually find Ashley buried in a pile of travel books, poring over maps, or writing about the unsung women of overlanding history, including her enduring inspiration, Barbara Toy. @desktoglory_ash
