Video of the Week :: South Korea by Motorcycle with On Her Bike

In April 2017, Polish motorcyclist Kinga Tanajewska left Australia on her around-the-world tour by BMW F8000GS. The trip was named “Are We There Yet?” because Kinga had no idea what her final destination would be. One thing she did know, however, was that her first stop would be in South Korea.

With bike shipping arrangements made through Bikes Abroad, the motorcycle was transported in a wooden BMW crate large enough to keep the front wheel attached. Battery connected, mirrors arranged, and handlebars fixed, she was ready for the next 11 days and 1,400 kilometers before boarding a ferry bound for Vladivostok, Russia.

Kinga notes that she had heard negative feedback from other riders visiting South Korea but that it can be easy to miss things as a foreigner traveling alone. Fortunately, she had a host of friends throughout the country who made it easy to find the otherwise hidden gems.

A few notable highlights were blooming cherry blossoms, spicy noodles, and beach camping with friends. “The East coast of Korea is amazingly beautiful, and the moment you leave the city, there are seemingly unlimited roads to wind your way through the mountains,” she says. “This region is also not so populated, and you hardly see any cars, so you can easily stop in the middle of the road and take a picture, just like that!”

After stopping by a BMW workshop and visiting friends from university in Busan, Kinga wraps up her stay by navigating the twisties of Seoraksan, the third highest mountain in South Korea.

Since then, Kinga has made her way through the Middle East, Central Asia, parts of Europe, Africa, Canada, and now, the US. Visit the On Her Bike YouTube channel to learn more about her travels.

Ashley Giordano’s first foray into overland travel involved a 48,800-kilometer journey from Canada to Argentina with her husband, Richard, in their well-loved but antiquated 1990 Toyota Pickup. Currently cruising along the iconic Silk Road in a 2008 Toyota Tundra, her full-time navigator duties are rewarded with bowls of plov and lagman noodles, hikes in the Tian Shan, and countless cups of fragrant Tashkent tea. As senior editor at Overland Journal, you can usually find Ashley buried in a pile of travel books, poring over maps, or writing about the unsung women of overlanding history, including her enduring inspiration, Barbara Toy. @desktoglory_ash
