Swiss/German couple, Sybil and Christian, have embarked on an exciting journey to explore the world as full-time travelers in their 2011 Mercedes Benz Vario 4×4, affectionately known as Benny. While the Vario camper is larger than your average garden variety off-road vehicle, the couple seems confident in the Mercedes’ ability to take on relatively challenging tracks and trails.
Sybil and Christian had already traveled extensively, visiting countries across Europe, the USA, Mexico, North Africa, India, Cuba, and Israel during their holidays and sabbatical year. They longed for the freedom to immerse themselves in different cultures and experience countries more profoundly. What better way than with a capable and reliable home on wheels? In 2015, the couple began the process of converting their truck into an expedition vehicle, and in 2018, they were finally able to set those wheels in motion. Since then, they have traveled the world, taking in the sights and sounds of different countries and cultures.
In this video, the couple arrives in Oman, exploring the country’s rugged terrain and beautiful coastline. Their first stop is Wadi Damm and Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, located in the Hajar mountains. The off-road tracks over the mountains proved the toughest challenge yet for the couple, with steep terrain and treacherous conditions.
From the mountains, they go to Al Sawadi, a coastal town, where they embark on a snorkeling trip to the Diymaniyat Islands. They also visit a camel race, immersing themselves in the local culture and traditions.
This video, with audio in German, is not an example of extreme off-road overland adventure but rather an excellent showcase of the beauty of Oman and the places which can be explored, even in a large vehicle.
