Video of the Week: Crossing Africa In An Alfa

Africa, a continent of beauty, danger, mystery, and wide open spaces. A place so many of us dream of, but very few would be willing to cross even with a brand new four-wheel drive. Yet one young European recently made a 22,000-mile, 9-month journey from the tip of Africa up through the continent and across Europe. A notable feat under any circumstances, but Jethro Bronner didn’t do this under just any circumstances. He did it solo, in a vintage sports car he restored himself, that just happened to be an Alfa Romeo. The following video from Praemio takes a look at his story, the motivation behind it, and the way it changed his life forever.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Chris didn’t receive a real taste of the outdoors until moving to Prescott, Arizona, in 2009. While working on his business degree, he learned to fly and spent his weekends exploring the Arizona desert and high country. It was there that he fell in love with backcountry travel and four-wheel drive vehicles, eventually leading him to Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. After several years of honing his skills in writing, photography, and off-road driving, Chris now works for the company full time as Expedition Portal's Senior Editor while living full-time on the road.

I’m a huge fan of vintage cars and camping/overlanding in a truck. This is a nice illustration of what my two worlds could be. Thanks for posting this!

    Hello,
In the very interesting story about the young man who restored and , I gather, crossed Africa in the same car there is a bit of confusion with regard to which Alfa he used. There is a teal / blue model 105 Giulia which I think is the one he restored and a red TI 4 door Giulia which he is driving in parts of the video. If you could please clear this up as to which Alfa was driven across Africa. I am currently restoring a 1968 Alfa model 105 Giulia. I’m sure that either Alfa would be up to the trek but I am curious.
    Thanks for the video!!
    Cheers, Barry Umberger
