Triple Aught Design – Praetorian Hoodie, Overlord Sweater, and Prelude Dolman : Field Tested

Layering is the secret to dressing effectively for extreme cold weather, and being able to regulate your body temperature is key. An overland journey to cold climates means that most of the day will be spent within a vehicle with occasional dashes into the elements for fuel stops or photo opportunities. A good base layer should be comfortable in a heated vehicle and for short or long forays into the cold while maintaining your core temperature. I found that the 100 percent merino-wool Triple Aught Praetorian Hoodie and Overlord sweater were a perfect combination to keep my upper body toasty and comfortable. Designed for versatile use in a range of environments, they reflect a blend of historical inspiration and modern functionality, suitable for working through the day (combined with a winter jacket for long periods outdoors), even in our sojourn above the Arctic Circle in winter.

Yes, these garments are an investment, but, as the old saying goes, cry once. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, you can feel the quality not only in the cut of these winter warmers but also in the weight of both the Praetorian Hoodie and Overlord Sweater, which is substantial and comforting. If I was packing for a trip to the Arctic tomorrow, I can guarantee that the hoodie and sweater would make the cut. That said, there is no reason you can’t wear any of the three garments daily; when the mercury drops, my wife, Luisa, and I do so with pleasure.

Overlord Sweater

The Overlord Sweater draws inspiration from the Wooly Pully developed for the Special Air Service during World War II. I must admit, I felt quite dapper wearing this garment, not to mention warm and cozy (I opted for it in black as my first choice; the OD Green sweater was not in stock). The sweater combines tradition with modern elements, offering a style that is both classic and contemporary. The sweater is made in Italy from 100 percent extra fine, non-mulesed merino wool, featuring a relaxed fit. It includes nylon cloth overlays in strategic wear spots such as the elbows, shoulders, and a pocket on the wearer’s left, enhancing durability and functionality. The 2×2 rib construction provides a comfortable fit and flexibility. The double 1×1 rib collar and the leather brand patch on the wearer’s left adds to its aesthetic appeal.

Praetorian Hoodie

The Triple Aught Praetorian Hoodie, inspired by the history of the Roman Empire’s elite Praetorian Guard, is designed for adaptable leaders who assume roles of responsibility. This hoodie, made in Italy from 100 percent Australian merino wool, offers an active fit and is Woolmark and RWS-certified. Its extra fine, 19-micron fabric ensures a comfortable, luxurious feel.

The hoodie features a unique aero hood design, reinforced elbows, and thumb-hole cuffs, providing additional protection and functionality. The full front coil zipper and YKK zippers ensure durability and ease of use. The two hand patch pockets and a Napoleon pocket offer practical storage options; the only slight criticism I have is of the size of the chest pocket; it is barely large enough to store a wallet. However, the hand patch pockets are the perfect size for even large hands. A notable design aspect is the drop-back hem, which enhances coverage and style. Overall, the length is perfect for me (size XXL and 6-foot, 5 inches tall), and the sleeves, with thumb holes, are the perfect length.

Merino wool’s adaptive fabric is a key feature. It regulates body temperature by wicking away moisture during exertion or warm weather and trapping body heat for insulation in cold conditions. This makes the Praetorian Hoodie a highly flexible option, suitable for various conditions with moderate thermal protection. Its four-way stretch fabric and streamlined fit allow easy layering and movement, making it a versatile four-season garment.

Not only is this hoodie packed with technology and highly effective in cold weather, but it is also a really good-looking garment you look forward to wearing. Having owned a few Triple Aught Design garments over the years, I can confidently say that the brand has a muscular, classic style that sets it apart from the herd and lends itself very well to overland travel.

Prelude Dolman

Triple Aught

The Triple Aught Prelude Dolman is a lightweight, versatile, and stylish garment that was designed for multiple body types by utilizing French Dolman-cut sleeves (wide at the armhole and tight at the wrist, also known as the batwing), along with a crew neck and a drop-tail hem for extra coverage. The unique fabric blend of 73 percent polyester and 27 percent merino wool with a waffle knit construction gives you a natural warmth with an anti-microbial finish that offers protection against bacteria, mold, and mildew, making it an ideal material for moisture-wicking. My wife would wear this long-sleeved shirt during the day to protect her from the harsh, reflective winter sun and pair it in the evenings with her Praetorian Hoodie. She loved the novelty of wearing a shirt that felt as light as a feather while keeping her warm during a snowstorm.

In terms of care, all three of these garments are relatively easy to maintain. They all require a cold machine wash on a gentle cycle with wool detergent and should not be bleached, wrung, or twisted. Both the Praetorian Hoodie and Overlord Sweater should be laid flat to dry and can be cool ironed or dry cleaned. The Prelude Dolman can be line-dried but cannot be ironed. It is essential to follow the washing instructions closely, as the three garments will shrink if washed in warm water. I, unfortunately, shrunk my hoodie but was able to restore it to its original shape with a cold wash and a hang dry. Man, was I relieved.
