Two Vagabonds, Today’s Travel Blog Discovery

An Overlander camper van is parked on sandy desert terrain near picnic tables, with distant rocky mountains and large sand dunes under a clear blue sky. Sparse desert shrubs dot the landscape.

It’s one of the most visually entertaining travel blogs on the internet. It chronicles the travels of two German overlanders and unfortunately for some of us, is written entirely in German. That doesn’t make it any less captivating. With a little trip through Google Translate, I’ve been able to sort out many of the key details. Simone and Olaf Patt hit the road in 2006 in a highly modified VW van to travel the world. By 2007, they had decided to sell their house and travel more or less full time. Not long after in December of 2009, they made the considerable upgrade from a VW van to an enormous overland rig, a Magirus 170 D. They have since traveled more than 60,000 miles through Europe, Morocco, and massive tracks of North and Central America. They have traveled as far north as the upper reaches of Alaska to the tip of South America where their journey continues. Their website is filled with beautiful images and videos. If you don’t mind a little cut and paste, and a few clicks of the Google translator, it makes for a fun read. I’d say they’re living the dream, seeing the world and having a great time.

A large, beige Overlander expedition vehicle is parked on rocky ground near a river, with a motorcycle mounted on the rear. Forested cliffs and water appear in the background under a clear sky.

A Barbary macaque sits on a rock in the foreground, while an overlander enjoys the view of tall, cascading waterfalls and lush greenery in the background.

An Overlander truck with a bicycle mounted on the back drives across a vast, arid desert plain with sparse vegetation. In the distance, flat-topped mesas and rugged mountains rise under a clear sky.

A stylized, vintage world map in brown and orange tones with a white outline tracing the Overland routes across the United States, Japan, and part of Eastern Europe across the continents.
